Hello need some advice.

I was a huge huge huge Neverwinter Nights fan back in the day, couldn't get me off it until NWN2 came out and completely knacked the online play of the old, and it never took off in the second.

I've waited about for AOC but it seems like a mixed bag so far and not really inviting me to take the plunge.

I've never played WOW or LOTRs online so was wondering which was the best one out there for me so far.

TBH i just wish they made The Witcher MP then i'd not have to be asking this question.

So which one would be best? (would love an opinion from people who've played them all - anyone out there?)

Difficult to say, depends on a variety of factors

Do you mind stylised graphics? or do you prefer graphics to be realistic?
Do you want to mainly PvE? or do you want to mainly PvP? or do you want a mix of both?
Do you want masses and masses of widespread content? or do you want something more specific?
Do you want an open world? or do you want zoning?
Do you want fantasy based? or do you want Sci-fi?

If you dont mind stylised graphics and you like PvE predominantly, then I would say go with WoW or EQ2

If you want really good graphics and like PvE, then I would say go with LOTRO or AoC

If you want to mainly PvP then I would say wait for Warhammer Online

If you want masses and masses of widespread content, then I would say go with EQ2

If you want Sci-fi based, then I would say go with EVE.

Best thing to do to be honest is download the various trials and give them a go and pick the MMORPG that best suits you. People will tell you that you should play X or Y, but the nature of MMORPGs means that nobody can be right in that, regardless of how much people hype game X or game Y to you, the only way to be sure that its the right one for you is to play it. Most MMOs have a trial available that you can use to test out the game, that would be my biggest piece of advice.

both wow and lotro got free trials so give them a go and see for yourself

been in AoC pvp weekend game looks great and im sure i'll get it at some time, i'll wait for tiral b4 i get full version

never tried wow myself as i never got into any warcraft game and i dont like the "graphics" of it

playing Lotro and am enjoying pretty much every minute of it, if u into midleearth then get it as u'll be able to travel round and it also looks great, you can get colectors edition for £15 that comes with 45 days + 2 weeks free trial = 59days of gameplay for £15 (good value imo)
i 1st got 7 day trial on us servers tried couple of classes then got 14 trial on europe that i play

Yeah i really like LOTRs, in fact i really enjoyed the several LOTR's mods on NWN's.

WOW is it a bit cartooney and dated?

As for style i want to do missions by myself than also to group up, and then when there's not much to do battle others or make friends etc...

The trial iades are great, didn't know about the free trials, so starting with EVE, which is downloading now.

Your best bet is to play the trials, they all have up to 14 days free so i'd give those a go.

Personally i didn't like LOTRO, i just couldn't get into it and it didn't seem as 'complete' as other mmorpgs.

I'm currently in my 3rd period of playing WoW and it really is a superb game, so much to offer for all levels of gamer.

But don't listen to us old timers, have a go and see what you think...

Good advice from the guys here.

You will get a lot of people saying this or that is the best mmo to play but I guess the best thing would be to narrow it down to a couple you like the sound of and have a couple of weeks playing the trial versions to get an idea of them.

My personal favorite MMO is World of Warcraft. I've played most of the big ones out and just found the polish and content where the best out. It will run on just about anything,(Speccy 48K included :p)it's easy to get into and has a slow learning curve. Also the amount of content around will keep you going until new expansion come out.

I predict this thread will turn into a WoW bashing thread within the next 10 posts

Are there expansion packs that are needed for WOW?

~I take it they are all priced around £10pm?

As much as I hate to say it, if you haven't played WoW I'd suggest giving it a go. It's leaps and bounds ahead of the rest and it's very unlikely that Age of Conan is going to knock it off the top spot. As the previous poster said just give the trial a go for WoW and a few others and make your decision from there.

Yes you will need to purchase The Burning Crusade to play beyond level 60 (around £10 to buy), and a new expansion pack will be out later this year. You can pick up a copy of WoW for £5 at some places.

Personally, I found WoW to be the most user-friendly of the MMORPGs - I introduced two friends to it who, for want of a better phrase, were never the freshest sandwiches in the picnic basket and they both settled quickly and got their hunters to 70th level :D Don't write it off because the graphics are a little dated - they feel appropriate to the game, which is excellent.

EQ2, AoC, WoW, LOTRO, DAoC.....they're all good games, but slightly different. Your best bet really is to download the trials and give them all a little run. Only you can say which of them is the best for you.

For sci-fi....there's EVE Online (which was too slow for me - sorry EVE-lovers!), Anarchy Online (is this even running still?) or perhaps Tabula Rasa - more of an online shooter (I was in the beta, but haven't heard much about it since).

The good thing about the WoW expansion is that you don't really need it when you buy the game, it mainly adds content from lvl 60-70. It does add a couple of new races but the old ones are more fun anyway, i bought the expansion pack when i started a new character 4 months ago and i've not even touched the new content as i'm lvl 47.

You can buy the original for about £7 and get the 30 day free if you want an extended try.

There's 1 expansion out for WoW called The Burning Crusade. You don't need it but it will limit your character an awful lot if you don't get it.

You can pick the World of Warcraft Battle Chest( original game, expansion & strategy guides for both) up for about £18.

Think the monthly sub is about £9

i thought there was something about a lich king too not just one expansion

This is all great info people, thanks very much, but what does Eq2 and DAoC stand for?

I don't see any mention of it, but try a demo of Guild Wars Nightfall or even the original Guild Wars Prophecies. They are very good PvE games with the bonus of no subscriptions. The only downfall is that the PvE missions are you and some bots against respawning AI, unlike WoW where you play with thousands of other adventurers.
It's certainly worth a try if like me, you don't want to pay subs.

I still prefer the look of WOW over any other MMORPG, im playing age of conan just know, i couldnt get into tabula rasa either, but wow always draws you back, im probably not hardcore enough for other games though.
