MMORPG: Which one?

Abit confused with you comment about no ppl wondering around in Dungeons n Dragon online, bushmins, the only instances are the quest instances, all the houses are public instances, the harbour, marketplace, taverns, meridia etc etc, these usually have ppl running about buying and going to quests, but if the OP decideds to do the trial then id suggest waiting till mod7 comes out that way there will be loads of low lvl players for him to party with as quite a lot of us will be rolling monks.

EDIT : I still go back to NWN1/2 all the time NWN>MMO's

I wouldn't agree mate, if you have any social skills at all MMOs will always beat single player games of similar type. Nothing like having friends to play along with, if you play a MMO in "single player mode" by ignore people around you then yes, but that's not the point of online games.

DAoC is still light years ahead of anything else imo.

WoW might be more popular but that was an established brand name before the game was even thought of and had decent marketing.

DAoC didn't, at all.

Im Enjoying Age of Conan right now. However although i am glad i quit Warcraft, Warcraft is definately the easiest game to pick up and play to whatever style you want.

Its instances are easy to get to/navigate. Teaming up with nice people works. Its basic system of tanks, healers, casters etc all gels together very smoothly. People have a role and they dont often feel left out.

I think its quite well balanced although a lot of people will disagree. I played a Rogue and a Mage to lvl 70 and raided with both for a while, and each class had its advantages/disadvantages.

If you can run AOC well, give it a go, i think it has the potential to be very good. But due to only being out a week or two its a bit buggy in places.

Lotro is very nice to look at, laid back i found to play. And it has a seemingly more mature player base than WoW (aoc seems more mature too). Although i only played lotro for just over a month, it was pretty fun and i probably only quit because i had no rl friend playing it through with me. Which is a more interesting way to play these games i find

Yeah i have no RL friends to play any of these games unfortunately.

PC gaming is very much my thing, which is a shame, but when playing NWN's i made lots of friends over there and felt very right at home on a specific mod, an i was hoping for the same kind of thing.

Computer spec inc E600 @3.2 4gb DDR2 8800GTS 512mb, so AoC should run well enough.

The beginning part of AOC is single player orientated (well a mix of both) , this sets you nicely into the story. I actually thought this was a brilliant way to do it.

AoC actually reminds me of The Witcher in the way that quests are talked through and completed. You go into a chat screen with each person and select what you wish to say.

I play AoC casually at the minute with my mate, and I just joined the OCuk guild tonight where everyone seems nice :)

If you decide to get AoC give me a shout, Im from south of the tyne mate. South Shields. So I speak the same lingo as you! lol

AoC is a superb game with the best graphics and gameplay i have seen in any MMORPG game to date. The game is buggy at the moment so i would recommend picking it up in a month or so.

But really is a great experience and i was blown away by the visuals, really nice eye candy.

I was a great lover of NWN, etc

Sounds quite similar to me. NWN was 'the' game, played it for a good 3 years, even got me into 'roleplaying' which to be honest I enjoyed a lot, and met some awesome people.

Have played NWN2 near to the end, but the multiplayer aspect to me pretty much died when I realised you had to actually download the world you want to play on from a website before connecting to that server.

GuildWars kept me occupied for a good while, along with the exp packs, brilliant game for different builds and PvP, but the PvE get's quite boring imo.

World of Warcraft, god damn the game, wasted too many hours playing this, good game, but it's pretty much raid get lewt which is +1% better and repeat.

On a smaller timescale i've tried RFOnline, City of Heroes, FFXI, Eve Online, none of which really appealed to me.

At the moment i'm playing AoC which is not bad, but far from great, yes it's nice to look at but take away the shiny graphics you're left with extremely buggy graphics options (increasing gfx increases fps in some cases), Fed-Ex quests galore (fetch this, kill this, take this) not much originality, which WoW seemed to have in a lot of its quests. Gameplay is still button mashing whether it seems original or not (click a combo, press 2 or 3 directions and repeat).

Pre level 20 it seems like a nice game, lovely detailed environments, but sitting at lvl 29 now I feel.. cheated I suppose, environments seem bland, no voice acting, same style quests, similar loot stats, can't see myself staying subbed after the free 30 day trial is up.

So, in my opinion, there's not a lot out there which is decent in the mmorpg market at the moment, it seems the mentality is 'if WoW can do it, then we can copy them and hopefully be as successful' and they improve upon nothing.

WoW is good, but i personally struggled to get the results i wanted without dedicating a lot of time to it. Missing dinner, delaying the girlfriend, generally re-organising my evenings aruond it. I've stopped now.

LOTRO i played the free trial, i really enjoyed it, but i feared that when i got to max level it would turn in to WoW. I've no idea because i didnt get far enough in the free trial. I'm going to give it another go.

Age of Conan i've played one night. Got to level 7 i think. It's meh. Only way i can describe it really. Meh. So many stupid bugs, but by far and above the one that irritates me the most is the inability to invert the damn mouse. This has been a staple option in games since the late 90's.

Want to try City of Heroes next :)

Avoid AoC like the plague

Horrid gameplay, dull quests, really bad instancing system, combat system is nothing but pure spamming of the keyboard in PvE, really bad and clunky movement system, bugs everywhere (although this will be sorted), and the chat system is an utter joke

Steedie - bugs are normal at release of these types of games, very few were bug free on release. Although keyboard mashing is something I'm worried about in AOC (not played it yet).

Most MMORPGs I've played have had their chat system altered and improved within the first 6 months or so after release, it's always low on priorities for some reason.

It really isnt that bad at all.

On the topic of keyboard spamming, i have no idea why people are going on as if Conan is the only game with this. In warcraft with my mage the most effective thing was to spam Frostbolt on a mob until it got near, then frost nova, then spam frostbolt again and it was dead.

i know healers who just spam heal all the way through a raid, its non stop. Dont use this as a reason to **** Conan off because its no different in this respect.

It has its bugs, but so did WoW when i started playing it on release.

Ive enjoyed questing 1-22 (i know im only on surface) of conan a lot more than i enjoyed it on my WoW days.

Wow is still the most polished, addictive and well made game there is though. But with these games to get rewards you need to put the hours in. Im talking 20-30hrs a week

Awesome game, TONS of potential, but dont bother.. its deader than the Dodo, you'll never find groups etc, huge shame really. :(

Thats why i think ill be going back to EQ2, there are still a lot of people who play it and even more high lvls who are willing to 'mentor' to your lvl and help you out.

I'm looking forward to playing AOC, partly as the guild I'm in are helpful friendly bunch. It's mostly about the multiplayer aspects of it, I know I'll never be alone with that guild and if I want to be I'll always have them in guild chat to talk to and ask advice from.

I think people get annoyed with mmorpgs if they don't try to get the multiplayer part filled in pretty quick, friends in these games make or break them after all.

Had a bash on EVE, a bit intense in terms of menus and all these bits and bobs, but the concept so far sits with me, not sure if its a payer for me yet, early impressions would say probably not.

Downloading LOTRs and will give that a shot.

I think i want a character based MMO rather than a ship (i guess i never get off my ship) i was hoping for an online mass effect.

Be aware that playing the EVE trial through to the end will leave you with a completely false opinion of what EVE is like. In order to truly appreciate it you need to have played it for a few months and get involved with player corporations.

It's probably one of the most complex but also rewarding MMOs out there. It's also second to none when it comes to PvP.

I have seen this kind of thread crop up here before. You might want to do a forum search on the names of the various MMOs to pick up more info.

Loads of good advice here - can't disagree with any of it.

I would like to add....

For me one of the most important aspects of any mmo is "polish". As an MMO matures it either dies or gets better and better. EvE, WoW for instance are mature, well supported, highly polished wonderful products with good support.

I think it is a mistake to jump into an MMO such as Age of Conan as soon as it is released. Let it run for 6 months to sort itself out (or die).

You will invest a horribly large amount of time in the MMO you choose to play. You want to seriously consider non gameplay related issues such as cost, support, long term viability, user written add-ons, and so on.

WoW would be my recommendation to start with. It is very slick indeed from all points of view. Because it is so massively successful there is an inverse snobbery associated with it where people like to pump themselves up by slagging it off. Ignore them and make your own mind up.

EvE is utterly superb but is more of a management or economic simulation or trading game in my opionion. I believe if you research the ENTIRE tech tree it will take about 25 years. You will need to play it for several months to even get started. This is the exact opposite of WoW where it bites from the moment you start.

A personal suggestion - avoid anything to do with Sony Online Entertainment (SoE). This seems to me to be the elephant's graveyard of MMOs where the old and sick and failed go off to die.

There is a somewhat old sci-fi MMO called anarchy online you might want to check out.

Oddly I found Eve PvP quite annoying, felt quite uninvolved in the action most of the time. It is one of the best for strategy and teamwork but I'd certainly not say it was the best mate.

I suppose it depends on how you play it. I actually found the same too when I used to be involved in alliance warfare a while back. You need to be proactive I think though. If you go out looking for fights in enemy space with just a couple of friends in small, fast ships it's awesome

There's nothing quite like being in a fleet of 100+ ships engaging an enemy fleet of similar size, though. EVE is one of the few games that really gets the adrenaline pumping during PvP – it gives you one hell of a rush :D

Also, note that every major content addition (expansion) is free in EVE – you don't have to buy expansion packs like you do in other games. It's actually possible to fund your subscription purely on ingame money, too, since you can buy gametime cards for ISK :p
