Basically I am finally coming round to the idea of getting a pay for monthly game - I have several hours a week that I can now spend gaming so think it is at least worth looking at.

Really wanted a bit of advice from those who have recently started playing one as to how easy it was to get in to and how much time I really needed to want to play one for for it to be worth it.

WOW for example - is everyone out there a lvl 3million PvP uber freak or are there still lots of new people joining?

I played EVE for a couple of months and was suitably impressed - I just didn't have the time to commit to it at that point.

Also I know I can go and get eve on a 14 day trial to have a look at it again - do similar things exist on the other games or do I have to lay out £30 to start to play like a normal game.

Sorry for the obvious noobness of this post - all comments appreciated.

You can get trials for most games. Some require Credit Cards others just give you a 14-day account. WoW will be absolutely dead until you get to the other areas of the game so the first 50-60 levels it'll be very quiet then when you go through the portal to TBC that's where everyone will be.

Other than that there is WAR which I prefer, very nice PvP based game. There's LoTRO which again I like and has the best graphics in any MMO IMHO and there needs to be no introduction to the story.

AoC I wouldn't touch with a big stick.

AS stated, try the trails of the various mmorpgs, as we all have different tastes in games and what we expect from mmos, i personaly like 1s that are all instances so no one from outside your party can enter and camp mobs or chests.

I believe there's a 10 day trial for WoW available out there, so I'd recommend you start there, give it a good thrashing and see what's what. Admittidly it's quite hard to settle into any MMO in such a short space of time - I initially hated WoW when I first played it, three years on and I'm still here, with 4 level 70's, numerous alts and waiting with baited breath for Wrath of the Lich King.

WAR is also a good choice, though after dabbling in the beta and some time after the initial launch I decided it wasn't for me and headed back to join my WoW guild in Black Temple. Horses for courses though - if you're a fan of mass-scale PvP WAR is probably a better choice than WoW, though I personally prefer WoW's combat mechanics and overall feel to WAR. That said, Wrath will bring a huge open-world PvP area, achievements, masses more exploring and instances on top of whats already there, polished classes, established communities.... meh, no choice in my mind!

Eve, I'm afraid, I simply can't comment on.

WoW has a free trial, 10 days. Warhammer online does not however.

But wow can be bought for 8 pounds, on cd. And yes there is always new players playing it. :)

WoW is very user friendly, and won't have trouble.

EVE online is well the steepest learning curve I've ever encountered in a game, but once you do over come that it's such a good game.

I havn't played WAR but I've heard it's similar to WoW so I don't there would be much trouble there.

There is also Final fantasy XI but that's just a thought, I wouldn't recommend it.

Guild wars is free if you like the sound of free online gaming. I havn't played it though. This isn't exactly in-depth but hope it helps. :)

Currently playing Warhammer Online which has the best PvP going in a current MMO in my opinion. For PvE playing LOTRO was really hard to beat for me, the storyline and group content was really good.

Well, you're going to get dozens of recommendations for both Wow and Warhammer, and then they'll start on at each other for daring to recommend (insert mmo name here) so for something a bit different, give Tabula Rasa a go. Excellent ground based sci-fi mmo, pretty sure it has a free trial, but I can't get at the website from work :

probably the best MMo out there is Lord Of The Rings Online,.....

mature community , polished gameplay with a cracking story and extremely good graphics not to mention easy to pick up and play ...

if that doesnt float your boat go for Warhammer and stay away from WoW but grab some free trials first .. gl

WoW would be the best MMO out there, good PvE side and PvP.

I hated LOTRO TBH, the combat system is well boring. Queuing up attacks = fail.

Thanks for the fast responses!

So it would seem my choices are:
EVE
WAR
WoW
Warhammer
LoTR
Everquest2
Tabula Raso
Guild Wars - Isn't free but just one upfront fee...

Any more to add to the list that people have played and liked?
Will probably start with WoW for 10 days and use that as a comparison :)

See some of you online!

That's pretty much it for the good stuff, there's a ton of free to play rubbish on the go, but the ones you've listed will keep you busy :)

Id thought id mention the game i play DDO, since no one else has. Its also done by the same ppl who do LOTRO ( ddo was before that )

If you are going to try the 10 day trial i would hold off till mod 8 is released as it will become more user friendly ( so no knowledge of stats and such, before play ) and introduction of a new starter area and dx10.

The mods are free and are usually implemented in a 3-6 month period, however it is one of those games that add VAT to the subscription, which is £8.99 +vat.

EvE or WoW really, WoW is definitely accessible to newcomers, if they continue the current pvp system then you can get good gear very easily.

Have to disagree - there's always loads of people in the newbie and mid-level areas. Mostly people levelling alts but in my experience they're usually looking to team up to do the group quests too.

I think they are making the gear harder or something according to some stuff I read.

Pretty sure they are making it so you won't have everybody running around in PvP epics too, but you can still get quite nice gear from PvP judging from the blue level 80 set.

Agree with this, never felt too empty when leveling a character, I think an area like The Barrens is always populated with people.

Guild Wars is awesome value for money, there is the full "Guild Wars: The Complete Collection" out now where you get all 3 games + Expansion for £25.

That is a helluva lot of game.

Superb game as well. :D
