MMORPGs - Which one to go for?

It's not busy like EQ used to be but there's always people to group with.

It's actually been getting better rather than worse. The low number of players is probably the only thing that's hurting it. Apart from that it's a brilliant game.

Well ive just started the launcher for the 14 day trial. If anyone else fancies joining me in giving this a go. Please say so :)

WAR is Warhammer Online :p

I did say I was a bit of a Noob When it came to MMO's :)

Cheers for all the advice - will try the various free trials and work it out from there. Certainly gave me a better taste for where to look for them though.

Wow was good especially the community was great but I stop at lvl55 ish cos it was getting kinda repetitive as it seems to be grinding the whole time, might as well play free mmorpg such as requiem:bloodmare if thats what you like

Eve was quite difficult but could be good but gave up (it somehow feel like building ship models ? :p) cos i dont have enough time...

Guildwars, got a copy as everyone on OCUK recommended it, but it was so quiet, all I did was do the main quests with AI henchman, so gave after a couple of weeks...

So now i just play TF2 which is mega fun!!! :D

I might try Stargate world, Jumpgate revolution , guildwars 2 when they come out.. I recommend reading massively for more info..

PS I also tried Pirate of the burning sea, really crap... also was in AoC "paid" open beta, so much issues I am not gonna to pay 35 quid for it...

If you're into PvE (killing monsters with other guys), WoW is for you.

If you're into PvP (killing other players), then WAR could be what you're after.

I don't like the PvP in WoW anymore, it's too pigeon-holed with everyone in their own little instance zones.

I'm downloading it now, so if you feel like sharing your username I'll catch up with you in-game. Hopefully ^_^

Free is free after all.

Agree with this, never felt too empty when leveling a character, I think an area like The Barrens is always populated with people.

Barrens is, yes but more because at about level 18 most people realise they can't really be arsed levelling this character any further and go back to their mains :P

I've played WoW since open beta and recently lost interest after some unfortunate guild related drama involving my friends being unceremoniously kicked out and leaving me in a pain of a situation- obv I couldn't stay really.

WoW is really good. Especially if you're new to the genre. It's mechanics are simple enough that an intelligent chap or chapette can pick it up pretty quick and do a decent job of it, but deep enough that there is an enormous scope for min/maxing and trying to extract the best from your class. The PvP is fairly mediocre in my experience; the honour gear is easy enough to pick up, but then everyone has it meaning that battlegrounds are decked out in it and will dump on you for a good few weeks. The PvE though, in my experience was excellent. Even if you don't get in to high end guilds there's still a fair old bit to get stuck in to, and even more in WotLK by the looks of it.

WAR is also very good fun. The PvP is very satisfying, it's very well polished, especially for a new launch, and pretty well everything has been thought of. What's even better is people are still exploring, levelling, learning the mechanics and classes so you can kind of get in and run with it as it develops. Though my server's fairly dead, but pick a good one and I think you'll have a good time :).

LOTRO was absolutely ******* awful. The graphics were poor, the quests and classes were boring and not terribly intuitive and I just generally got no 'feel' from it, it didn't spark me in any way. You're welcome to try though, your mileage may vary ;)

Age of Conan most definitely wasn't any better, bug ridden, massively lacking in content and probably the worst interface and chat system I've seen in a game. I has high hopes and the graphics were fantastic but was woefully let down. It needed another 3 months development at least and now I suspect it's probably dead as everyone saw the state of the game and it lost about 65% of its playerbase.

EVE online was too much. The playerbase is too entrenched, the game is so ridiculously inconvenient and inaccessible that it's very very hard indeed for the newbie to get involved in any meaningful way. I sort of quite enjoyed my trial thingy and was considering subscribing thinking I was making some progress and then I encountered a couple of players who made me look like a gnat after 2 weeks of trying to work it out and realised the amount of time and effort I would have to put in and couldn't commit to it. The real time system seems silly to me too. I mean it's great in that it means that the players with the most spare time aren't always the most powerful but realistically they still will be.

I even tried Vanguard: Saga of Heroes for a bit. I say a bit. I mean less than one quest. It seemed really very bad.

The bottom line: War or WoW are probably you best bets imo. Good communities and solid games. LOTRO might work for you, it may not. Read and research. I also know nothing about Guild Wars or EQ2, but from what I've played WAR and WoW are the only ones still installed after the first week, let alone the free 28 day gametime.

No swearing

I just wanted to add I bought WoW last Friday (Battlechest + 60days game time + Refer a Friend Trial). In playing for about 10-12 hours, about 4 tonight with said friend I've managed to get to a level-20 Drenai Shaman.

I've limited experience with MMO's in that I've only tried Guild Wars & Hellgate (not strictly an MMO I know), but just to mirror the comments above, it's reasonbly busy (a few others around, but not overly so in the started areas), most happy to group up or quest together, really stable (hasn't crashed once) and very easy to pick up. I've always wanted to experience WoW and it is a classic - no doubt about it. I can imagine I'll get bored after a while but I'm enjoying it so far.

Lol, i Just finished playing some of the Vanguard trial.

Got to lvl 5.

Suprisingly good fun actually, graphics are nice enough (although a little poorly optimized).. and the people on it are very friendly and helpful.

Im gonna mess about on it for the next week or so. Its definately worth a punt for the free trial at least!

Hardly little, battlegrounds are fairly large, Arenas are small however.

Also the large PvP only zone (not instanced) is rearing its head next month (Lich King).

WoW is proberbly one of the best for new comers to the genre. Nice and easy to get into I still really enjoy WoW now, although have been enjoying WAR.

I'd recommend Warhammer Online if you want to pve and pvp or Everquest2 if you strictly want to pve as I hear the pvp isnt that great.
