MMO's to play now!

I too have been looking for something to eat up my life, and what I've mostly been playing MMO-wise is SWTOR (eugh) and Tera.

TES Online at some point this year...

Dungeons & Dragons Online - started playing it again recently and it's eating up my time. Works very differently to WoW mind you, mostly instanced adventures for a single party.

The multi-classing system alone would keep you busy for years though.

Actually its not as bad as when it first launched, they fixed the majority of the hideous mem leak issues and glitches etc.

Well, actually todays PC's are just overcoming the terrible coding of the engine, they haven't fixed anything, it's an unfixable mess. It looks really bad aswell, animations are clunky as ****.

Saying all that it has some fantastic features that other MMO's should grab (defensive/offensive targets, the Bloodmage class, original Necromancer minion idea)

OP doesn't mention LOTRO so I'm putting that in the hat too, great game and free to play.

Wish GW2 would bring in the same legendary system as LOTRO :(

They actually released several patched specifically streamlining the graphics engine, it's plays an awful lot better than it did at release. Which was the last time you played it, by the sound of things.

I'm kinda in the same boat as OP, I'm currently MMO'less and have been for awhile but nearly all of them are just lacking what I love about MMO's. However my definite fix is coming soon!

Check out FFXIV A Realm Reborn if you haven't already. It's coming sometime this spring/summer and it's really good.

I played the original FFXIV which at one point was terrible, but Square-enix sacked the dev team and has made a point of redoing the game entirely. They made the original, which was a complete mess of a game, into something fun and worthwhile, however their real work was in remaking the game entirely in "A Realm Reborn."

They're about to start closed beta stage, and I think there are 2 more stages of beta after it (including an open beta.) I was in alpha and it was incredible even in that early stage. Can't wait for closed beta to begin.

My guess is a summer release, but I know they will want it out sooner rather than later given the start FFXIV had. It's also coming to PS3.

Really? I had the original game, and played it for about half an hour before I decided poking myself with a sharp stick would be more fun. I got a mail a few days back with a beta signup link and just binned it :)

i used to play ffxi and loved the force grouping back then, plus the storylines, cutscenes and unlocking everything on 1 character, also i loved camping the infamous named mobs and beating the real money traders! i found wow boring because i didnt like playing on my own, the boring quests felt like more of a grind than the 6 man grind groups from old skool ffxi because at least you were with people, and the missions like chains of promathia were really challenging and fun! i eventually quit when they raised the lvl cap and changed everything! but was playing less anyway because i eventually did get a bit bored and was rather time consuming. other mmos i have played havent lasted long because they all followed the same boring quest routes and no real cut scenes or story, that is until i found the secret world

so secret world - great game - more fun than a lot of single player rpgs but an mmo! lots of cutscenes, a storyline, good character progression with no classes and lots of abilities to unlock, use 2 weapons and an auxilery weapon at the same time, eventually you can unlock and use everything with 1 character (but not at the same time) so a lot like ffxi in that regard, plus its challenging enough that you really need to look at your abilities and gear to survive at times or *shock horror* actually group up outside a dungeon. Not that many dungeons and end game atm, but the dungeons that are there, are very fun and keep even dps on there toes. Also makes a change from the fantasy theme.

so safe to say im not a fan of the traditional mmo, i may give ffxiv a shot if the secret world gets boring

TERA was good for a spell, I think it kept my interest for about 6 weeks then I quit. It's a good game, the PvP was loads of fun, one of the real few games in recent times where a group of 10-15 people could take on 25+.

Instances were not too bad either, actually having to active dodge etc was pretty fun.

Think im going to try TERA. Seems like it has good views.

I agree though, the markets quite dry at the moment if im honest.

Sounding like a broken record but I would honestly give Guild Wars 2 a go again if you want something to tide you over for a few months.

The active user base took a small dive in November/December (you only have to check out what games were out then to see why though) and concurrent numbers have been climbing week on week since the new year, they will probably take a dive again in April though just due to the single player games out in that month. Its the best game on the market imo and there is new content being released (slowly) as we speak.

I can't think of any other MMo thats worth trying, they are either shrinking in numbers or trying to fleece their playerbase of their last vestiges of cash (hi ToR!). Thought about a game like Skyrim? if gfx aren't that high on your list of priorities give NWN (+ expacs) a go
