Mobile 8800

nvidia have said they will not do an retail 8800 mobile till a shrink due to the HUGE power requirements and heat output, however, they will be doing lower powered versons such as 8600gt etc. etc.
I tested a beta portable desktop with the best effort they could do, it was a total joke to say the least.

so 7950GTX is about as good as it gets until the die-shrink? (not interested in SLi - would like more than 3.2minutes of battery life and a bush-fire rating of fair or lower :D

7950gtx is the fastest single card solution available for laptops, although the latest sli drivers for laptops disables one graphics unit on battery and the other in lower power and can attain a respectable battery life (in comparison to other top end machines such as the m1710, single gpu version)

actually it was the 1710 I was looking at - had a good giggle when 'steve' told me that the battery would last between 5 and 6 hours :D

Any idea what an accurate figure is for them with the 7950's both high and low power usage?

I picked up my 1710 with 7950gtx yesterday mate, i can do a gaming test tomorrow and tell you how long it lasts, ive not ran it off the battery yet.

Edit : if i pull the power lead out and keep full settings on the pc, it says 2 hours 40 mins.

Awesome - would appreciate that - looking at the reviews (once I'd wiped the drool from my keyboard) they reconned about 2hrs with the screen at 6/7 brightness and wifi on full so looks pretty good - love to know how long it lasts in Oblivion! :D

I dont have oblivion unfortunately, only things ive got installed are counterstrike source and WOW at the mo, if i can get my daughter to stop playing WOW, ill give it a go tomorrow.

Fujitsu-Siemens have a Core 2 Duo laptop (AMILO Xi 1554) with a Mobility X1900 (RV570) which should give a mobile 7950GTX a run for its money while offering better filtering quality, at least until mobile G8x and R6xx variants appear.

Cheers,

I myself was in a similar position.. as im planning to get a new PC / laptop in the middle of march..

I have already delayed the arrival of the DX10 Mobile GPUs long enough and its seems to be to large a hurdle for them to over come any time soon. So im planning to get a 7950 GTX somtime next month..

How will this chip compare with a 6800LE 128mb (which im now aware is pretty rubbish) :)

Im planning to play games such as Supreme commander and Armed Assult on it.. no realy DX10 stuff yet.. although will have Vista installed.

EDIT: o and bare in mind ill want to play most games at native res of 1650x1080

I thought long and hard about the m1710. Looks like a great machine, and I was offered one (sales rep over the phone) for £1200 (C2D 7200, 7950GTX, 2GB, Vista, etc.). I'd want to keep it for at least 2 years. It was a hard decision, but in the end I just felt it was too much money for a machine that is already, to an extent, out of date interms of its DX9 GPU. I expect there will be a DX10 part available before too much longer but it won't be top of the range. It'll prolly be 2008 before any DX10 mobile parts with any oomph become available.

With NHC you can tweak it to get it to do 3h 30min, although i have 8% wear on my battery so i get around 3hr now.

rv570 is also known as the x1950pro, the mobile version is slower so the 7950 is faster.

Well thats a closer price to what i had seen.. Although i dont actually want a dell, im planning to go with another competitor, but probably cant post on here.

Is a: T7400 2.16ghz, 2 gig RAM, 7950GTX 120Gig HDD for £1500 all inc.. So probably be my purchase. As much as i like dell i hate there Laptop cases.

There's some info here on 8 series mobile parts. Looks like late Q1/early Q2 to coincide with Santa Rosa (another reason to delay buying a laptop right now). They won't be high-end parts, but maybe mid-range 8 series will compete well with high-end 7 series; who knows?

yeah i kind of already knew that.. which is another thing that makes me want to delay... Lets hope the have a fixed date by mid march then i may delay :)

Yep - that's the price that they offered me over the phone on Saturday - still plenty of room to come down I think - also hoping for the £1200 mark then I'll bite their arm off!

If it really can do 3h+ I'll be a happy man - sick of having to change battery half way through movies - tried to watch Munich the other day and it killed both batteries - still haven't seen the end

Just wish I could afford one of those m2010's 20.1" screen..... oooooooo....... mmmmmmm....... ooooooo...... Damn - another keyboard ruined! :D
