MobileMe Launch
7/9/2008, 6pm-12am PT

As part of the MobileMe launch, www.mac.com will be taken offline at 6pm PT on Wednesday, July 9th.

Members will be unable to access www.mac.com or any .Mac services during this time with the exception of .Mac Mail accessed via a desktop application, iPhone, or iPod touch.

MobileMe will be available as soon as possible during this maintenance window.

So that's 02:00-08:00 BST :)

You can already configure Mail to send and receive @me.com mail.

Username: sameasdotmac
Password: sameasdotmac
Incoming: mail.me.com
Outgoing: smtp.me.com

It will be nice to use the Online UI though.. whose betting it handles better than 02 servers? ;)

Anyone know if you can add your own email addresses to this or does it only work with me.com?

I don't really see the point in paying £60 a year for a service Google offers for free.

No you can only use me.com as the domain. I've placed my order for it, think it's well worth the money.

Im tempted to use it as well as my main email account is up for renewal in august...

can I point Domain Names to it? If it means loosing my current emails then sod it.

Not true, on .mac you were able to use your own domain, the true answer is we don't know until we can actually login and try it.

Yeap, I suppose I'll have to wait for reviews to come out on the quality of any spam filter and the ability to use personal domains. If these two features aren't there I'll be going back to gmail.

I think I'm heading the same way (ie, not using MobileMe). I thought I might go with it before, but the cost doesn't seem worth it.

I have a custom domain and hosting for £15/year. I send all my custom domain e-mail to Gmail, which has an excellent spam filter. I sync my mac and iPhone via IMAP to gmail and use my hosting smtp server to send e-mail from my custom domain.

So, all the advantages of gmail (storage, spam filter), a custom domain, web hosting, all for £15.

It would be nice to work out a way of syncing iCal with Google Calendar, but I haven't managed it yet. I don't have enough calendar updates to make the cal features of MobileMe worth it. My daily syncing of iPhone with iCal is enough.

While I can't fully comment on the quality of the spam filter in MoblieMe, in .Mac it's mostly done through software/learning from what you tell it. Gmail is incredibly good in that if a spam message gets to your Inbox and you move it to spam, then the Gmail team review it and if it is add it to a Gmail-wide spam filter.

In short - Gmail's is better...way better ;)

And AdWright, this just popped up in a story in Google Reader today :)

Oh, and if you don't have the need to edit things in iCal (from what I can gather you just want your current calendar on there so you can sync your iPhone to it?) each calendar has a private URL that iCal can display and you can then sync to your iPhone :) Have a read here.

I use my own private domain with .Mac but then I just set my domain email address to forward to my .mac one. Not the best solution because all replies come from my .mac address, but it works anyway.

I've always found .Mac to have excellent spam filters :)

Doesn't the time difference make this launch late Wednesday / Early Thursday.
