MobileMe - Yes or no?

is it worth getting mobile me if you dont have another device apart from the macbook to use it on? I enjoy using the idisk but I have access to the microsoft version via office live so thats not too much of an issue. The big thing i like is the webspace and iWeb but for just idisk and the webspace, is it worth the money?

Probably not, for the email, calendar and contact backup and web access I think it is, particularly if you hate gmail as much as I do...

Have been with mobile me for a year now and I definitely recommend it if you want the me email account. As other's have said, google does it all for free.

I have MobileMe but only as it was cheap - I don't use my MobileMe email mainly as I have Google Apps for my domain which does push email to my iPhone.

I'm testing out Mobileme now. I must admit it is pretty seamless, but I'm sure that once the novelty of watching my contacts and calendar synch on my iPod touch wears off I'll realise it's pretty expensive for what it is. I only hope that moment comes prior to the end of the 60 day trial!!

Only 5 alias email addresses seems a bit stingy as well :-(

Edit: well just cancelled only 2 days in. Poor connectivity, and just the price for what I was getting mullered it for me. If only I hadn't gotten used to gmail's high availability and push email, Mobileme might have seemed better value for me.

Yep - well worth it in my opinion. You get what you pay for afterall. Use iDisk at home and at work and means all my notes from any calls I've made are synced as & when I need to.

Gmail
Google Contacts
Google Calendar
Google Sync (iCal & Address Book for Mac, Push Email & Contacts & Calendars for iPhone)
Dropbox
Picasa Web Albums/Flickr

very true, but I'm still quite happy to pay for mobileme myself. I'm not particularly wild about gmail and I like the integration with all my devices out of the box. I suspect I could sync my google contacts into my mac address book (where I need them as I have apps which grab their contacts from there) but this way it just works.

neither is flawless but for the equivalent of £5 a month I'm happy to pay for apple's solution at the moment...

that said, idisk sucks, performance is terrible even by the standards of webdav volumes in general...

Push Gmail / GCal and Contacts do the majority of MobileMe for free. I'd give them a try first and if you want the other features you can always try MobileMe later.

I used to use the freebies until my main email account (gmail) got hacked ... getting it shut down was a NIGHTMARE. It was active for weeks, and all the time the git who hacked it was emailing my friends, going through my emails, getting passwords for websites etc ... total hell.

I've had to raise a couple of support calls with Apple's mobileme recently and response was excellent .. well worth £40 a year to run my email properly with support should I need it. Would you let a company that charged nothing delivery your post? Gmail is great, but only as a 2nd account IMO.

My MobileMe account is due for renewal and I've been trying Google Sync as a replacement. It half works, half doesn't, though that could just be my problem and not theirs. The push email isn't as good as MobileMe, but it does a job.

It all depends whether the fee is worth it to you or not. I'll be paying.
