Modders, Braiders look in here!

in anycase, modders would prefer to do it themselves.

buying oem cables in a different colour isnt really modding is it?

Id much prefer to do the cables myself and buy bitfenix extensions for the hardwired cables such as the 24pin and 8pin cpu.

I quite like the idea myself, but I am lazy...and never done any cable stuff before so the idea of doing a full psu is a little bit daunting.

The price is very steep but factoring in time spent, tools and materials bought, plus the risk of messing something up (dont ask me what...i would break something...its so likely as to be a certainty!) then I suppose the price isnt that bad.

To be honest, even a full set of cable extensions would set you back quite a bit, and they'd take up a load of space in the process as well what with having to hide all of your stock PSU's cables behind the motherboard tray. Even if these kits are still more expensive, it probably won't be by too much and the space saved over cable extensions is enormous.

I plan to order a Corsair AX650W from Overclockers tomorrow for Friday delivery and intend to get a blue kit to go with them (though sadly I won't be able to order the kit from OcUK because they won't have them in stock until at least the 10th and I want to be able to do the upgrade on Sunday or Monday).

But it can cost that amount to do it your self easily, if not more, I have never done a full psu and it cost me enough just to do a foot of the 24 pin and 8 pin and the two gpu cables, trust me, these are value for money over do it yourself.

Except that it's unlikely that these were handmade, so the likely cost to Corsair is tiny compared to the cost of someone's time to braid a load of normal cables. So seems expensive to me.

Pfft even if people can braid their own cables for cheaper, the time involved... minimum wage would be better off working and buying than doing them themselves.

I can understand wanting to do them yourself, but don't complain about the price imo, it's fairly good value in comparison.
I'll admit it wont cost corsair anything near that to produce these, but until theres competition, i think this is a fairly good deal.

(Look at the 7 hours quote above... lets say its wrong and it's 5 hours.. that still about £35 for someone on minimum wage, and then theres the buying of materials which people have mentioned rivals corsairs price)

I think you are in the wrong place?

Comparing 'modding' with working as a minimum wage? Lol seriously.

Its supposed to be a hobby, not 'work' as you've just put it.

LMAO @ minimum wage comparison.

Have you ever tried self braids? RJK did it on his last PSU. It took him over 7 hours and it wasn't his first try.

This, removing the pins is literally a real pain. The pcie blocks are sharp as hell. Also, I spent more on the sleeving and heatshrink than the whole set of cables costs...

LMAO @ minimum wage comparison.

I don't think you understood his example.

Some people complained about the cost. So he was simply saying that if someone was employed on minimum wage, the cost to make them would be £xx. So its not that far off the original prices.

It was nothing to do with anyone who does them at home for a hobby.

I don't think you understood what he was saying.

He is comparing 5 hours (example) worth of 'hobby' time of doing the cables yourself against 5 hours of working @ minimum wage. He is saying that it is better to work for 5 hours, earn the money and then purchase them instead of doing them yourself.

My response to that was that the braiding/modding is accepted as a hobby and therefore you wouldn't compare the time you spend modding/building a computer against working for minimum wage.

At that rate you might aswell buy a pre-built pc and have done with it - hence my "i think you are in the wrong place" comment.

I understand the figures and what he is saying in terms of cost, but the whole point of modding for the majority of people is to spend time and do it as a hobby.

Anyway, enough posting.... Overall I think really good idea/products for those who have the money and dont want to spend time braiding cables for themselves.

Brilliant! Didn't know you guys are getting these in stock. I think the price is really good personally. Now I just need to decide between the blue or the black, hmmm...

Very nice, might have to get a red set when i finally get round to getting the rampage 4 board I keep telling myself to buy :)

Very nice cables and good to see they are individually sleeved but at half the price of my AX psu it's a tough sell. Shame they don't sell them individually like the cable extensions you can get from akasa or bitfenix, that way you could stick in a couple of say white cables along with the black ones that come with your PSU, plus the price reduction of course. Plus, maybe I'm a minority but I only use 1/3 of the cables from the bag anyway!
