Modern games on a CRT...

Any good/adjusted CRT/Plasma will look better than anything LCD can do, esp. IPS with its "grey" blacks and low contrast ratio.

Possibly all them but weight is an issue for cost of shipping and risk of damage also.

I have a wanted thread in the MM here, so the discussion is best moved there or listed for sale if you have access. I doubt I have the ££ for the Sony, though although someone else would probably be interested.

I had the 19' Mitsubishi Diamond Pro. Playing Unreal Tournament @ 1600x1200@75Hz, was the 4K of its day :p

..never could get used to the very faint thin 'wire' that ran across the width of the screen, about a third of the way down, though. People said that you just get used to it and stop noticing. but for me it was a case of nope, what was seen could not be unseen.

You will find if you installed the proper driver it supported 1792 × 1344 same as my 19NF (Pro was higher model), Max Res vs Max Recommended Res.

I edited my monitored drivers to install on 64bit here is the 19" Plus max RES (think this is the unedited driver).

To add 64bit you edit this part (my 22" Plus Modded driver).

Oh, NOW you tell me! only 17yrs too late...:p

I do have to admit that if one ever comes up on the auction site, in good condition, I would be sooo tempted to try for it.

Despite their bulk, I think it weighed 20Kg+, if I remember, and took up just over half of my desks available depth, the pictures & colours it outputted, were rather glorious.

The HZ would be little too low on my Plus at 68HZ so better off with 1600x1200 but your Pro did higher HZ at each RES AFAIR.

Was it a 920 or 930SB (the latter did 1920x1440@73 HZ) so 1600x1200 would be at least 85HZ?

It was a long time ago, I just seem to have 1200p @ 75Hz in my head for some reason, I can't remember, and probably never even knew, whether it was a 920 or 930.

Most likely the 920 as 1920x1440p rings no bells with me whatsoever.

Ugh, picturing a CRT next to my basic Samsung 49" LCD or the 55" OLED, I'd want to chuck the CRT off the balcony, just out out out get outtt

I remember in 2004 or 2003 buying a 15" CRT from my school for £10, I had dual 15" monitor setup, cool at the time, but jesus christ the amount of wasted space, I will never miss anything like that, ever.

I highly recommend you sell the 49" LCD & 55" OLED and replace them with 15" CRT's :cry::cry:
Think how great them 240p VCD will look :D

Yeah even though the flatness was nice I could never get used to the horizontal line on the *tron monitors.

I think I had the 900 model, don't recall 100% now - it died after a year and a half or something IIRC.

EDIT: I didn't have much luck with higher end CRTs - 2-3 died within 2 years or so though they did get a lot of use while the cheaper stuff just went on and on :s

Never had any CRT TV or Monitor die period (oldest is a Mitsubishi 4:3 29" TV @ about 25 years).

TV normally used less quality Shadow Mask (so did some monitors) so do not have the two thin wires on screen that is there to hold it in place for the which is called Aperture-grill on higher end monitors (your eye could not have been that good if you only seen 1 wire as they has to be two, 1/3rd and 2/3rd's), only really noticeable on white backgrounds up close. ;)

That Sony 43" CRT weights 200KG
We had a call out to a Grundig 37" CRT back in the day. Converted barn and this thing was upstairs. It came with handles that you had to bolt underneath to lift...Mental

I got a 25,000 volt shock off one as I wasn't paying attention whilst discharging the tube to replace the LOPTX

LOL my mate dad used to have a 37" Toshiba CRT 4:3 back in them days..

I used to have a 32" wide flat screen CRT Toshiba upstairs in my bedroom

They must use a lot of electricity

My 17" model is rated at up to 90w. My flat panel is something like 43w. Not as dramatic a difference as you would think but they definitely use a considerable amount more power.

One of the issues with keeping a CRT is if you need to repair it and you're not experienced. The tube can stay charged and that's where you can get shocked from. It has a very high voltage which can be dangerous if not discharged correctly. I've heard of people getting zapped (like a taser or something) but haven't heard of any deaths. I would guess as a rule, working with just one hand in there isn't a bad idea. I would like to possibly look at replacing whatever caps in mine have gone (resulting in the geometry issue I have) but to be honest I'm not experienced enough to do it safely. I think CRT monitor or TV repair people are probably hard to come by now and expensive as a result unless you know someone.
