The RA was a lightweight car made to be turned into a rally car. It will have minimum sound deadening and short gears. As standard, they didn't even have electric windows.

Have a read of http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm

Have you got some insurance quotes yet? An RA is about as expensive to insure as your going to get.

Don't want to sound like I'm going on, but I don't want you to set your heart on something then find its more expensive than you thought.

 I saw one for $5000 AUD not long back, wish i had called the guy instead of just emailed him :(
He never got back to my email :(

just saw this... The RA's apparently come with 275bhp as standard, and are usually within my 6k max allowance....

As andi says, watch out for the short gearing: it means a cruise at 75mph in top is something like 7000rpm! (I'm sure someone can give me an exact figure.) Mentally quick off the line, but very thirsty and annoyingly loud and tiring to to drive.

As mentioned, an import is going to cost you more in insurance and statistically is more likely to go wrong.

If you have money coming out of your ears its not such a big deal. If you've got £5K and hoping some of that will cover insurance your going to struggle if anything goes wrong.

Its not as exciting as a Type R or STI but there is a lad selling a nice clean UK car for £3,500 on SNet right now. I would post a link but not sure if its allowed.
If your quick an head over to SNet I've BTTT'd it for you in for sale general.

Good luck and don't buy a dog!

Imports can be a pain to insure but uk models are surprisingly not too bad.

When I was having a look a few weeks ago at jap turbo stuff a uk Impreza was the cheapest to insure.

shortbox RA's are fine, they have a long fifth, or at least my mates did, would get him all the way up to silly speeds :D

Ideally i wanted to stick to 5k, but i do have a litte savings for any mishaps (oops engine rebuild  :p).

The WRX and WRX STis are an option but i thought the RA would have been "the one" for the cash i have to work with... But comfort and sound deadening would also be nice... If i see a decent UK example at a good price ill nab it :p

RAs are technically WRXs on a diet and some were fitted with different turbos to an otherwise normal WRX engine - only STI & STI RA had forged pistons etc. The gearing will be short and some will have been retro-fitted with a longer 5th.

Also, bear in mind that RAs were originally sold cheaper than WRX and STI becuase they were destined for rally use and only got very basic equipment. Once they get over here they have a few £££ slapped on them for being an RA but in fact it should be the other way round - just a thought if a seller tries to tell you its worth more.

Cheers Zip! - Ill take a look...

Ill basically just have to keep my eye out for bargains... such as the one Will Gill posted!

i dont want to buy something too performance focused that lacks in basic things like electric windows, comfy seats-ish, and maybe even aircon...

That was perfect for £5000!

Imports have more BHP due to less regulations in Japan. I think they might be decated from stock(i think)

No, the jap cars have more bhp as standard as across there they use higher RON fuel.

Which in turn, makes imports more prone to engine failure due to effectively feeding them incorrect fuel once they get over here. Also the quoted figures of 260-280 and all the other wild claims for import horse power is based on a higher rating of fuel so they won't be making that when they get over here.

The other issue to consider with older imports that have just arrived is that they have spent all their lives limited to 115MPH (or thereabouts). They get over here, have lower rating fuel put through them, are asked to go faster than they have before and then people wonder why they let go.

I got this for under 6K last year

car.jpg

It a high milage car...but had a new engine at 88K...full service history

It a W reg UK turbo 2000 insurance was £760 last year (due soon) fully comp loads of of NCB and I was almost 30, UK Cars are a lot cheaper to insure.

It goes like stink...cost a small fortune to run......but the grin factor is worth it

SO far I had to have it serviced C service is about £350 (subaru wanted £450) new oil pump........new pads on the rear.......tyres etc

One think that I was VERY Surprised about was how friendly other impreza drivers are..always saying hello

There's a blue V reg uk turbo at a dealer near me for under 6k, 98k on the clock but looked in v good nick.

Lovely car :)

Your insurance seems high? Mines only £600 ish with all mods declared (wheels, brakes, engine etc). Wasn't paying over £700 when I had to declare a drink drive ban.

I guess its down to location. Round these parts, a car being pinched is headline news. :)

Really nice man!!! Headlight facelift is deffinatly the one, after seeing a lot of pics and went to see one today, guy wanted 10k for his P1 and said he wouldnt mind if i came round to see one in the flesh! was a cool guy considering he knew i had no intention of buying his car...!

MY99s are the ones to have really. Better bumper, better lights, better bonnet, better interior, and better ECU.

i so badly want a subaru

i seriously lust after one of these :

'03 STI with PPP and prodrive PFF7s

its on PH for 15.5k which i think is quite reasonable looking at Dealership prices.

/me is going to save very hard.
