Monte Carlo

The Monaco Grand Prix is the one race of the year that every driver dreams of winning. Like the Indy 500 or Le Mans, it stands alone, almost distinct from the sport from which it was born. A combination of precision driving, technical excellence and sheer bravery is required to win in Monte Carlo, facets which highlight the differences between the great and the good in Formula One.

The Armco barrier-lined circuit leaves no margin for error, demanding more concentration that any other Formula One track. Cars run with maximum downforce and brakes are worked hard. Overtaking is next to impossible so qualifying in Monaco is more critical than at any other Grand Prix.

The Portier corner is key to achieving a good lap time around Monaco. It is preceded by the Loews hairpin, the slowest corner in Formula One, and followed by the tunnel, one of the few flat-out sections of the track. Some great names have ended their races in the barriers here, most notably Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher.

To win in Monaco places a driver's name on a list that includes many of history's all-time greats. Both Graham Hill, the man nicknamed 'Mr Monaco', and Schumacher have won it five times, Alain Prost took four victories, whilst Stirling Moss and Jackie Stewart each won here three times. But the record of wins in the Principality resides with the Senna, who won in Monte Carlo six times.

The race has been a regular fixture of the world championship since 1955, but in that time the circuit has changed remarkably little. Slight alterations were made for the 2003 event, in particular a new, gentler entry to the Rascasse corner, with even bigger changes in 2004, with a new pit complex and increased spectator capacity.

Woo. I love Monaco.

But why is the DRS detection point so far before the zone? Its got the pit entry between the two as well. I don't understand why the detection and activation line aren't the same. The system doesn't need 10 seconds to figure out if the driver gets DRS.

Wonder if Caterham or Marussia could finally get a point this year? They're closer than ever and the tyre deg could spice things up a lot.

edit: @Skeeter

That's a ridiculous place to have it considering it's such a short straight with very little overtaking potential at the end.

Yay for the most boring race of the season \o/

On the plus side, as a Hamilton fan, with the complete lack of overtaking here and the Merc's qually pace maybe he'll be able to get a decent place even when his tyres just melt away, or is that wishful thinking? :p

Can't remember why, think it has always been that way.

I believe it is pit lane management. GP2 and / or Porsche races on the same weekend cannot share the same pit area as at other tracks, due to the limited space in Monaco.

The opposing more cynical view would be that they get the tourists in the casinos and shops for an extra day :)

Woohoo - me and the g/f are in O by Piscine, between turns 14 and 15. One of the best changes of direction in F1 (although the race is likely to be a bit pants). Fingers crossed for good weather.

People talk about the Trulli train, but Mark Webber's win in 2012 was just as bad IMO. He cruised around in 1.19 for most laps of the race. Given the criticism about driving within the limit in 2013, it will be interesting to see how this race compares with last year.

The difference was Trulli actually qualified on pole in 2004 (and he was driving the third\fourth best car against the MS\Ferrari juggernaut). Webber inherited the position after Schumacher's grid penalty.

Should be some amusing brain fades and safety car periods as is the norm for Monaco lately. Might even watch it :p

Webber was also purposefully holding everyone up to help Vettel move up the grid, which worked very very well for Vettel, though according to Vettel after his stealing the win this year incident, Webber never helps him... ****.

I don't know, the biggest problem with brain fade is the tiniest mistake when you are pushing the car to the edge, once again because of the tyres this year the cars won't be pushing to the edge, they will be so far from the edge it will take a pretty drastic mistake to cause safety cars. We've had YEARS of safety cars ruining races, yet not one this season, there is a reason. Maybe some rain will do it ;)

I can't see Merc even winning this, surely they'll just get jumped in the pits at some point?

jumped at the pits, possibly, its not the fastest track, nor the best circuit to heat up tyres and go out and do an awesome outlap, and the pit lane exit while slow also lets you cut the corner. If you get ahead even with colder tyres and less grip it will be very hard for someone to jump them.

I assume Merc will slip back but, well look at last track, while slower Rosberg was holding them up then those harder tyres for both drivers didn't wear down quicker, they just never actually turned on to get them speed. That was last year their worst race pretty much as well, Monaco was from what I recall, less bad on the Merc to start with, so also shouldn't be as bad this year. If they can do what happened last week, keep ahead and the tyres don't randomly not work for the car then it will be more like the first stint last week throughout the race, but a FAR harder to pass at track. The real problem would likely be guys doing less stops, Kimi might have the ultimate advantage here with less stops and guys doing more stops dropping back and needing to overtake.
