Mondeo 2.5T died on motorway

So, another update (this process is taking a while...).

He has had his mate (http://www.engine-specialists.co.uk - Impulse Developments) in to look at the engine block. It's 3 thousandths out, so would not be awful with a good head on it, but difficult to know how long it'd last.

Anyway, I'd like to keep the car for a couple more years so decided to have the engine out and get the block re-machined. Plus 2nd hand head with a small reskim (original is like a banana apparently). Plus new head gasket and a whole host of other smaller items (I will get invoices so I know exactly what's been done/replaced). £1700 and should be "like new" according to Gary.

So, not amazing, but as long as he does a good job, it'll be worth it. Engine is hopefully out and off to Impulse Developments today. Just looking forward to getting the car back now!

Oh, and he's going to do the block mod while he's at it (no extra charge, as the main cost of getting it done is the labour of getting the engine apart, apparently).

Quite a costly job but at least it's worth the money if your keeping it another few years. An added bonus that your getting the block mod so you won't have to worry about the cracked liners in the future!
Should get it remapped when it's all finished :D

It is, the block mod itself is 4 metal shims between the cylinders, it's buttons. The bulk of the cost is labour, the rest is parts for putting it back together, new belts etc :)

Someone has not been servicing there engine...

The condition of that water is terrible and looks like a completely blocked oil way..

Indeed. It really makes me wonder whether it was serviced at all before I bought it 2 years ago. I don't have a clue how that could happen.

It always irked me that the oil still looked quite brown after a service, I guess I know why now...

Did the oil and water contaminate each other or something?

Must have. After failing it wouldn't hold any coolant and the oil level was extremely high. Not white/chalky but it must have been coolant in it.

Was there no service history to accompany the car?

Thereby hangs a tale that I'm embarrassed to admit to :(

This was my first car purchase, my previous cars had been old hand me downs. I was changing job from one where I travelled abroad every week to one where I had a 250-300 mile a week commute with two weeks notice.

I urgently needed a car and found this one at a trader. It didn't have the service book but he insisted he was getting the service history from the place it had been MOT'd at. Come the day of purchase, he still didn't have it, but I was starting the new job in two days and urgently needed a car. Again he insisted he had spoken to the garage and they had the service history and were sending it to him. I believed him. You can guess the rest of the story.

Big lesson learned...You would have thought someone buying a car with an engine like that would be at least somewhat into their cars. I don't understand the thought process behind not servicing properly.

Some people are blind to the needs of a car...

Also some people see the service as a crazy expensive payment, when in fact if they just can't afford it they could simply change the oil and filters personally for less than £75... and an hour of their time.

I have srevived my mazda (basic oil and filters ) twice myself and once at garage to get service history proof.

Best to keep these things in good condition internally

True. I may as well do oil/filter changes myself. There is only a service history from when I've bought it.
