Hi

So as the Mondeo always gets recommended in the 'spec me a car thread', what trim and engine size is the best bet to go for? Looking for a cheap run around for about £1k.

Any help appreciated.

A Mk2 (pre 2001) Ghia X (top luxury/toys spec) with 2L petrol engine may be possible for that kind of money. There probably aren't any/a lot of the Mk3 Mondeos for a grand though.

Yup, Mk2 at this money. 2.0 or V6 if you dont mind spending a bit on fuel.

Ghia X is nice, Si isnt bad either.

Nobody really wants a Mondeo, but they are the sensible choice

For me it'd be a mk2 2.0 in at least ghia spec. Engine wise the 1.8 isn't any different to the 2.0 in terms of ecconomy but feels a bit slower. The v6 is quite thirsty for very little extra speed.

There's not much speed on paper between the v6 and 2.0 but the v6 feels a lot better, pulls from lower down, gives a better shove higher up and makes a much better noise :) It is thirsty though, especially as most are paired to an automatic gearbox.

Avoid the TD like the plague

ST24 is the one to go for, or a Ghia X RSAP, however the latter are very rare.

Problem is, ST24 looks better (only because of RSAP), but the Ghia X is better spec'd.

Got a 1.8 Zetec Mk2 over a year ago for £700, so a nice spec one is easily do-able for £1k.

Boring as hell, but thats mainly because it does the job of "being a car" exceptionally well.

Can this be the official Mondeo thread for a while? I'd like to ask whether the Mk4 still has the same problems with the diesel engine that are often mentioned here for the previous models? I'm looking to replace my Mk3 petrol next year and am thinking of the Mk4.

My father-in-law has the ST TDCI, he seems to like it, hasn't had anything go wrong it it yet IIRC and he drives it daily. Only thing that i don't like about them (aside from the engine!) is the lesser spec'd interior (no Recaro etc).
