Mondeos

Mondeos are crap. Absolutely no idea why they are so highly rated on here!

compared with what ?

they're boring econoboxes designed to drive reps up and down the motorway and as family cars for carrying kids and and stuff around.

They do the job of being "a mode of transport" while being boring and efficient quite well.

But theres a who class of cars whose job is to do exactly this as well. Like the vauxhall vectra. I cant think of another car in its class that does anything vastly better than the mondeo.

I like how you're almost describing your own car as a boring, efficient, econobox :D

I suppose it depends on what you would own one for.

I didn't buy my ST24 thinking "I really, really want to own one" but i did know that it was the best car in its class at what it does.

what problems were there with the Mk3 Diesels ?

Was considering maybe a 2.2 ST tdci

I'm thinking of DMF and turbo problems which always seem to be mentioned in relation to the Ford diesel engine, could be barking up the wrong tree though, I'm not fully clued up as to what the exact issues are, just that they are always described expensive to fix and the DMF one in particular seems to be regarded as a case of when, not if. Just wanted to know if the Mk4 uses the same kit as previous models and thus is it at the same risk? Or is it this was just a Mk1-2 problem, and the Mk3 was ok? Someone put me out of my misery.

Its a repmobile thats had a big engine stuffed into it.

Its front wheel drive and torque steers like a *****

But its fun. But theres no getting away from its roots as a boring repmobile. Which is what at least 60% of vectra 1st owners will be - company cars owners.

God the "mondeos are crap" brigade are annoying - they seem to be missing the point completely.

Anyway, potential problems on the ST TDCi are DMF and injectors, turbos are fine generally (well, as fine as any other turbo diesel - that is to say a potential trouble spot but nothing serious)

The DMFs were uprated in 2005 when the 2.2 TDCi was launched - so in theory any ST TDCi, 2.0s post 2005 or earlier cars that have had the DMF replaced should be much more reliable. Again, they're still potential trouble spots but unless the car has had a life of hard launches, clutch riding and rough gear changes it wouldnt give me cause for concern.

Injectors, like any turbo diesel can be problematic but really only at higher mileages (upwards of 100k). Again, if the car has been looked after it wouldnt bother me unduly. Running them nearly empty on fuel, driving them (pointlessly) to the redline or fitting "tuning" boxes are the sort of thing that kills them. If one fails, they're tricky to diagnose and some garages will tell you to replace/recon all 4 - which is where the reputation for 4 figure bills came in. Specialists will be able to bench test them though, so unless you're unlucky enough to have more than one fail at a time, its a sub £300 bill for diagnosis and reconditioning an injector.

Other than subframe bushes on the estates, there really arent any other issues - would be a step down from your VXR but not a bad choice as they'll do 50mpg :)

I bought an ST24 RSAP saloon when my company celica 140 went...Didn't handle quite as well but for a saloon it was pretty well planted...and quicker!

Never set out looking for one - always considered them pretty dull cars and a MK2 without the kit looks extremely dull...

The old man just got one but a ghia x, struggled to find a decent st tdci. He likes it, albiet slower than most of his older cars he gets on with it and is saving him a fortune in fuel.
