Mongol Rally trip 2012

How much is this costing you?

Sorry can't read the blog - blocked at work :(

Defo something I'd LOVE to do.

Scary if I think about it, but not realy going to know till we get home late August Early September.

I'll roughly break it down, very rough. 2 in our team so some costs are shared. more in your team the cheaper but more cramped it gets.

£714 - team place -shared between 2
£695 -Visas but we have 6 of them, per person
£900 - car - shared between 2
£400 -car upgrades and insurance etc shared between 2
£100 - life insurance per person
£1350 - car deposit month before we leave refundable on return ? shared
£200- bits of kit, misc stuff - shared between 2
£1000 - got to raise for charity as part of sign up deal, done already
+ - whatever our fuel, living costs are going to be for 5-6 weeks while on the road.

Take into consideration that we have already raised our £1000 for charity otherwise we'd still have to pay it. And £900 raised towards the cost of the car which is donated to charity at the finish, we have a few kit sponsors lined up and have had gear donated as well. Our accommodation and travelling expenses are coming out of our own pockets for the trip, but no idea what its going to cost in places like Kazakhstan Mongolia etc.

it's not going to be cheap but sponsors can help out where certain gear is needed, and it is potentially 6 weeks away from home so I've saved money that I'd normally go on holiday with anyway.

Should be on next year again, get it sorted and get it done with a few good mates. :)

It'll fly by dude! Are you all set now? What else to do?

Few more days working on the car, Sort Insurance, check on a few jabs and do a test drive up to the lakes for a weekend fully packed to see how she does. rest of the time is just going to be fund raising once the sunny weather gets here. :)

I did this!

It'll be the best thing you've ever done. It took us 31 days.

It's a 1/3rd ;)

Hmmm, haven't read that bit yet... You've clearly got through Ukraine though in that one, Can see Mike's handiwork on the bonnet... or would you rather ****** Mike? xD I'm actually enjoying the book so far! I think you've just got to Mother Russia in it. Or about to go into Kazakhstan... Somewhere around there is where I'm up to :)

Good luck btw OP, should be fun :)

Adam, tiny engine or emergency vehicle are pretty much what you're limited to.

More of an event than a competition, Quite a few rules concerning age and engine size of the car mainly 1.2 litre of less but you can take higher but pay a £100 add on for every .1 above 1.2 You can take emergency vehicles but certain rules apply again.

Age of the vehicle for this year was it had to be no older than January 2003 but that is potentially going to change for next year meaning people will have to take a newer car because of the Mongolian import rules changing this year.

It's not classed as a race of any sort, the idea is to just manage to finish it in one piece or even two pieces taped together :)

Ahh that makes the swift a great contender then. Must be hard to find a 2003 1.2 for cheap moneys.

Fantastic! So happy you're enjoying it. Makes it all worth while.

You'll be surprised at the end when the cars get auctioned off as well.
Our friends took a 206. It was battered by the end - air con destroyed, exhaust had fallen off in the desert, shock absorbers gone, generally a mess.
They bought it for £400 in a questionable state in the UK.
some Mongolian bought it for $2500 at auction at the finish line

Too true, plenty of 2002 1.2 cars like the rally favourite, Nissan Micras at a good price but just that bit too old for this years Rally. But we should be Spot on with the Old Swifty, they have a good Mongol Rally pedigree, but any thing can and is likely to happen, especially seeing as we are taking her on the Pamir Highway "Gulp"

No air con I'm afraid, just wind deflectors :) or should I say a very sweaty :(

Ye K11 Micra's are the conquerors from what I've read, but like all great things they come to pass, unless your bringing it home that is and then you can take one.

You would be so much better if you can share the driving, there are people who are and have done it solo but I wouldn't fancy all that driving on my own.

2 of us in our team so 50/50 won't be too bad. We did have 7 of us going in 3 cars at the start but they all crumbled for one reason or another, certainly sorts the wheat from the chaff on a trip like this.
