Monitor overclocking?

Would one of you lovely chaps or chapettes please explain to me how exactly you go about overclocking a monitor? I've seen it mentioned several times on these forums but I have no idea how you would go about it, if there are only particular monitors / gfx cards that can do it etc....

I'm looking to get a 24' monitor in the near future and I was considering getting a 120hz one but ultimately the significant increase in price is a bit of a turn off. Any recommendations for a 24" one that's under £200 and could be overclocked via my 560ti 448?

its referring to the rather dark art of trying to force a higher refresh rate into the monitor than it is specified to support. Most LCD's will be designed to run at 60Hz refresh rate as an optimum refresh rate, some will allow up to 75Hz on some interfaces and if the interface chips can handle it properly. Some screens you can even force higher than 75Hz, for instance some of the Korean monitors were known to allow refresh rates of >100Hz in extreme cases

this is all done in the attempt to offer higher frame rates for gaming when vsync is being used, allowing you do do more than 60fps (60HZ mode) or 75fps (75Hz mode)

in reality though it's a very mixed bag. often while a screen might allow you to input a higher refresh rate, frames get dropped anyway so its pointless. there are also sometimes impacts to pixel response time controls (like overdrive impulses) which can cause problems, and also the generally unknown after-affects it might have on your screen in the long run.

i wouldnt recommend it really. if you want or need higher refresh rates, look for a screen designed to run at 120Hz. that will give you proper support, reliable frame rates, no dropping of frames, no issues with overdrive control and no long term side effects. it will also allow you to support stereoscopic 3D content if you want

I'd love to get a 120hz monitor but with the cheapest ones being about £300 I find it hard to justify spending that much money. I understand it's the best option I'm just trying to see if there's a "ghetto" solution to this!

Would you be able to make some recommendations on what I should be looking for or specific monitors that would be good?

You sure? I've JUST found the XL2420T for £249.99 + P&P + VAT - Bargain!

I have a viewsonic vx2025wm which can do 75hz, in vga mode.

Not sure if its just placebo but coming from 60hz it does feel a bit smoother.

249+ vat is 299, I can't justify spending that kind of money. I'd get a 120hz straight away if that was different but unfortunately it's not!

Any suggestions with the criteria I have?
