hi

ive just got a acer x3812 pc tower , now im having trouble working out the best way to connect it to my samsung 205bw monitor which has 2 available connections, a dvi-d and d-sub which i think is VGA.

the tower has a vga and also a hdmi.

what should i do , perhaps hdmi to dvi or vga to dvi or perhaps just vga to vga?

please help:)

thanks

Your best bet is either a HDMI to DVI converter on the monitor (so that it accepts an HDMI cable) or my preferred solution - get a cable which is DVI-D (male) on one end and HDMI (male) on the other. I got a 5m cable like this for less than a tenner and it works great.

HDMI/DVI will look better than VGA.

It should work fine.

As for HD, the two main resolutions are 720p (1280x720) and 1080p (1920x1080). Your monitor is 1680x1050, so not one of these particular standard resolutions - but its still very much HD in my eyes.

Also...

DVI and HDMI use exactly the same video signal. The only difference is that HDMI also carries audio. It doesn't matter if the screen is "HD" as the PC will send a signal at the resolution your monitor supports. It works exactly the same as a DVI connection.

well after doing a bit of hunting i cant seem to find my dvi-hdmi cable , and dont really want to have to buy another cable if i want see a lot of difference.

would vga from the tower to dvi on the monitor be ok , thats what im using now on my old pc and it seems ok? , or would vga to vga be ok as well

thanks

I suggest buying the cable, its not gonna cost you much at all (seriously, just google "DVI HDMI cable" (without quotes) - look at the top result).

It will give you a better picture for your new PC.

In the mean time VGA to VGA will work - but at that resolution it is far from ideal.
