Firstly I've called this a progress log as the finished article is somewhat a while away due to funds and finalizing some minor details on the design and getting some accurate costing to produce the finished article in a way that will require minimum fabrication.

I've chose to post here rather than Case Central as this is somewhat specialized to those who which to use the EVGA SR-2, Tyan and Super Micro 2 and 4 proccessor boards as it will comfortably hold a HPTX Mobo and plenty of cooling options.

Now a quick pic, a side view is coming but im waiting for the render to finish.

I'm going to email round various hardware companies for fans and W/C gear so I've got a proper looking setup to build in it as my W/C will look inadequate in a case of this size.
 
The design could even be scaled to house two uber crunch rigs with one mobo using Inverted HTPX quite easily as well S'ah

And this roughly outlines the cost of building one, however this is just for materials, I need to shoot off some emails to get quotes on bits being laser cut as I dont have the energy to put the man hours in needed to fabricate all the panels and won't get them anywhere near as accurate as they could be

Interesting, I have had a big old server tower for a while now and although it could be used as it is I would like to make
a completely new back panel but I would not know where to start.
I would be very interested in knowing how you go about making your back panel.

What aspect of the back panel production are you looking at halz, the easiest method would be designing in some form of CAD software, personally I prefer solidworks. once you have the dimensions you can export from there to DXF which is standardized for 2D and have it cut by an engineering company that has either a laser ot water jet cutter.


I'm not sure if the student 90 day trial of solidworks is still available but it can be found at a reasonable price ;) and is very simple to use, the basics I picked up within a couple of hours of playing.
 
So DXF files are the standard used in the engineering industry?
Had a look on the website, you can get something called DraftSight for free which can create DXF files, its only 2D though.
 
Correct DXF are standard, ive not tried draughtsight but PhillyDee uses it. 2D is fine as DXF is 2D you then specify material and thickness to the company thats cutting it for you.
 
Good to know, my next question is - as the PCI sheild has standard dimensions (apart from extra slots for gpu's in some instances)
is there a template somewhere or the dimensions, its this bit that most troubles me, getting it right.
 
Great, I did try Autocad at college many years ago and did not like it, I hope DraftSight is easier to use than that was.
 
I found AutoCAD horrible and i used prodesktop at school for 3d which again was horrible, ill have a look at draughtsight if I get time.

leaving work now so ill sort it out when I get back, ill give you a dxf of mine as well
 
Your proposed case, 630mm deep and 230 wide is similar to mine which is 610mm by 210mm so that could prove must useful, cheers.

The depth of yours is indeed monsterous :eek: :p

Brilliant, thanks, all I need now is the starting position i.e the distance from the bottom and side where the i/o sheild hole would be cut.

Measure it off your existing back panel as it isnt a stardard spacing from the side and the top.

That was slow, I only a mile and a half from work and still drive. should have been back by about 25 past but forgot to grab something from work and im off now till next wednesday for my birthday.

Don't worry about Hi-jacking its still keeping things roughly on topic, its crunching a case building of sorts

That is logical....which is why I didnt see that :rolleyes: :D

You have actually inspired me to start this, here is what I have to work with, nowhere near as nice as yours but it fits my budget -
Pic 1, Pic 2
All the drive carriers will be removed as they are not required, new back panel (repositioned with extra gpu slots),
a new paint job and thats it, oh and a bucket load of fans as well !
As its the first time I have done anything like this I think thats enough, but I might pick up some idea's from here, who knows.
