oem cpu + antec kuhler 620 to allow oc to 4.8ghz?

photoscubaman do you have a case to put that in as you'll be giving it to your father?

Why? why waste money when its only to see him through and it will end up in his dads PC?

wouldn't it 'work' faster at 4.8ghz?

and oem + the antec kuhler is only £17 more than getting the retail, or if thats too much then why not oem + gelid tranquilo? will allow hime to oc it to 4.6ghz, and for his dad it'll keep the cpu cooler/quiter then the stock cooler and cost same as the retail version.

id need a case and a dvd burner
if we can keep under £500 could be an option

you're the expert on what that board can/can't do not me ;)

as I said if the antec kuhler idea is too much go the gelid tranquilo as it'll cost about the same(well £2 more) as the retail and give better cooling, be quiter and allow him to oc it to 4.6ghz for his use then either set to stock or 4ghz for his dad.

Theres absolutely no reason to waste money when its not needed.

Also the Antec300 fits a maximum ,
Maximum video card size: 11"/279mm (Note: some video cards may block access to the adjacent hard drive bay)

A GTX580 3GB maybe longer?

The Bitfenix takes 320mm to the HDD bays.

It comes with a stock intel heatsink+fan with thermal paste applied to the bottom.

are there any additional things needed?

err, nope, its pretty straight forward.

The PSU is good for a GTX580, you just add the drives and install Windows.

sounds like a great plan, thanks for your help. No doubt things will change again but even if they do the oldman will get something nice for christmas.

ps dont you sleep you were on here 10am this morning!

I was up earlier than that;)

Just a bit of advice, save more money, if a SR-2 and 56** XEONS cost that much, imagine what a SR-3 and SB based XEONS might cost? also the water cooling gets more complex and expensive as you need two CPU heads etc.

thats what im thinking, If i can save another £1000 i might just be able to build it.

the main problem with the x79 build was the lack of ram options using 8gb sticks.
buying some time probebly is the right thing to do however hard!
