Moral Objections to Sponsors

I think he's being rather daft, though Wonga are a very tacky sponsor. He's probably just using it to get a transfer.

Agitating for a move considering last season it was Virgin Money, at its core no different. A moneylender. So brain dead or greedy.... Probably both.

Instead of protesting because he's a Muslim, why not protest because Wonga are another in a series of morally dubious money companies who prey on the poor with their ridiculous 'payday loans'?

It doesn't look like it's just Cisse who objects.

There was quite a fuss kicked up when Newcastle first signed up with Wonga and I raised the question in a thread we had on here about it. Post 46 onward:

Since Newcastle's agreement with Wonga there's been a few clubs that have rejected big money offers from companies like Wonga too (In Bolton's case they agreed the deal but then backed out of it after a back lash from their fans):

Tbh as a muslim i can see his point, i think and im only taking a guess here is that he is probably wondering where his wages come from ie are they coming from Wonga who do loans at extortionate interest rates or are they coming direct from the owners pockets.

Reason i say this is because in Islam you are not allowed to accept money if it comes from gambling, or has interest on it etc. For instance my job originally i did not know that my wages were coming from my boss's earnings from his gambling side of the business. Once i found out, i spoke to him and told him that i cannot accept those wages so will either have to leave or he would have to pay me some other way without the gambling money. Luckily for me my boss was understanding enough to make sure that now my wages come from his non gambling side of the business.

Like i said im only taking a huge guess, it could be that he wants out but if thats the case then instead of using this as an excuse, he should just say i want out.

As for the barclay premiership sponsorship??...it would be a problem if the players wages from all the teams were being paid by barclay. As far as i know i dont think that is the case or it could be??.

But honestly its just a mountain out of a molehill, a lot of muslims i know work in the finance sector ie banks etc and dont have any issues with being paid by them but then i know of a few that wouldnt accept a job in a bank or finance sector.

TBH I think you've been had! Besides, money isn't individual coins, money is a single entity, you can't say one bit of money is gamble free and another isn't because it's all from one pot called the global economy. If your boss stopped gambling all together would he be able to employ you? If not then you're still getting his gambled money. Does he fill his tank up with gambled petrol money? Feed his belly with gambled money? You're still relying on his gambling to pay you.

Being opposed to gambling because it's wrong to profit from other peoples loss is saying you don't believe other people don't understand what they're doing. That means you think you're better than them which is more wrong imo. If I gamble I do it knowing I can lose, if I win I know somebody else lost, I also know they knew they could lose, it's not immoral. The only immoral thing is the way some companies deal with the collection of said loss.

Who says he isn't. Afaik there wasn't this problem with Virgin Money.

Usury is a subjective term and one could apply it to Wonga but not Barclays/Virgin.

If he takes this stance, then I hope he practises Zakat.

He probably does. Not sure hoe it is relevant though.

Interesting debate and I'm not sure I understand Islam well enough to make a view, although maybe he is refusing to play to force through a transfer because of the sponsorship deal? Although he has surely known for a while Wonga were going to be 2013/14 sponsors?

As has already been said I bet he doesn't refuse his wages , which come from an owner who very much gambles ..........

He is being a gimp. Wonga pays part of his salary and he has no objection to that. This is what I love about religion, all the little sidesteps you have to take to be a good boy and how you can pick and choose which parts of the religion are deeply meaningful and which parts are inconvenient or undesirable.

Is it ok if I take the money from gambling as payment for something and then pass it on to a muslim. Then you haven't directly received gambling money. What constitutes gambling? Putting your money in a bank is a gamble albeit very low risk.

Company I am contracted too makes weapons, at the start I thought long and hard about how it made me feel.
If I wasn't doing the job, someone else would be and in these times.....I took the job!
Everyone is different, personally I think he should be allowed to wear a blank/chairty shirt.

Should everyone be allowed to choose what they want on their shirt? He is being stupid. He is still profiting from the sponsors lending of money. The barclays premier league; he is benefiting from their lending business. I have no idea where he thinks his salary comes from but he is choosing to interpret his religion in a way that means he still takes home his huge pay cheque and the club has to do the work to "abide by his religion". I have so little sympathy for people who think the rest of the world should go out of their way to pander to an individuals wishes.
