More BFBC2 woes

I haven't tried running it without the CPU OC but I don't want to either (it's a prebuilt machine and the OC is something they did when they set it up). I really think it's a software/driver clash somewhere, I don't think it's a problem with settings.

I've uninstalled Afterburner, so it's not a problem with that. I'm going on the assumption that it's the Realtek drivers at the moment as it seemed to run better without them last time and when I tried it a minute ago without them (but without a reboot too) it did a CTD instead of crashing the whole machine. Not enough to confirm, but it's a step in the right direction.

EDIT: Gonna try again with Realtek disabled from the Device Manager instead of uninstalling.

EDIT again: With the Realtek drivers disabled I've just had another CTD with the error that my display drivers have stopped working. It's maybe two problems? Not having the Realtek drivers active definitely makes it not crash as hard, but it's still crashing.

OP you can turn off auto install by following these steps, I know how annoying it is from personal experience.

Disable Windows 7 Automatically Installing Drivers

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are times when Windows Updates recommend for installation a hardware driver that is not necessary the latest. Even if we manually search, download, and install the latest, Windows 7 will, on its own, replace yours with the one recommended. To disable W7 driver software update selection and installation, you have to change the Device Installation Settings and Windows Updates. To do so, proceed as follows:

Device Installation Settings:

1. From the Start Menu, select Devices and Printers.

2. Select the single device, right click, and in the menu click Device installation settings.

3. Under “Do you want Windows to download driver software and realistic icons for your devices?” select “No, let me choose what to do”.

4. By selecting No, the choice will be expanded. Select also “Never install driver software from Windows Update”. Under this choice Windows will not do any searching for recommended driver updates for that specific device. Save changes.

5. By selecting “No, let me choose what to do” and “Always install the best driver software from Windows Update”, Windows will offer the driver for you to keep under Recommended Updates, for possible later installation. Save changes.

6. The choice to “Replace generic device icons with enhanced icons” is offered only in the manual selection.

Hope this helps.

Try running prime95 and/or memtest for a couple of hours to make sure that your CPU and ram are working okay at their OC'd values.

A normal 6970 defaults to 880 on the core and (I think) 1450mhz on the ram. Try running with those settings in CCC. Also manually set the fan to 100% (it'll be super loud but it's just temporary) to test that nothing is getting too hot. On that note, tried running with the side of your case off?

When I bought the PC they did a 10 hour stress test on it with the values they set (including OCd CPU) so I'm sure it's not that.

As said above, I have ran the GPU at stock settings and the temperature isn't too hot, so it's unlikely to be that either.

You said you ran the GPU at 950mhz didn't you? If I missed the bit where you said it was ran at 880mhz then apologies.

Sometimes overclocks set by the companies providing the PCs go wrong or there's an issue that only becomes apparent later. Just assuming that it definitely can't be that leads to you spending hours and hours testing things and not getting results that you can read anything in to. Start at the most basic level (the hardware) and ensure that is running okay. Once you've done that you can start to look at the software.

I've just been playing it and it's worked fine for long enough for me to assume it wasn't going to crash.

The only things I really did differently this time were that I booted the game with fans at 100% and stock clocks (880/1375) then after that seemed to be running fine, I bumped up the OC (to 950/1450), set the fan back to auto. I also turned down AA in-game as well as turning on Vsync (which brought up the mouse lag problem). I set those back to normal soon after too and managed to run it for about 40 minutes with my usual settings. I still have the Realtek drivers deactivated and using my external sound card (so no mic available).

Without OCing the GPU, it ran at around 80C, with the OC it was at around 84-5C, are those acceptable? I plan on getting some more case fans soon anyway, those look hot but not hot enough to cause problems to me but I'm no expert.

I've had the same problem and tried the realtek and PB fixes but none of those were my problem.

I have worked out however that it was due to some of the MSI Afterburner features. You have to go into the MSI afterburner install folder and rename the RTCore.cfg and restart Afterburner - this will disable some features - such as your overclock so remember to rename it back and restart it again to put it all back after your game...

Let me know if this helped.

You mentioned you are running Afterburner. I have had issues with BFBC locking up aswell and read somewhere may could be due to Punkbuster having troubles with Afterburner's low-level hardware access interface (options). Think you can also rename/delete RTCore.cfg in your afterburner folder. Havent given it a long enough test yet but might be worth a try.

Ahh just realised this had already been suggested sorry - this is what fixed it for me - just dont forget to restart afterburner after you rename it.
