More hypocrisy from Sony

There are a lot of people here assuming that the blu-ray play back will be of a above average quality.

I never read a lot of good things about the dvd play back on the ps2

I never had an issue with the DVD playback on my PS2 and it was my primary DVD payer for years. IIRC Nokkon was the same, could be wrong though

While it wasn't a problem with the newer ones, the initial revision of the PS2 had some very shoddy DVD drives with mis-focusing lasers.

I had a first one got just after launch and i have a slim PS2 bought on Launch day, never a complaint with either (though i dont use it any more)

Neither did I. But just because that neither of us had problems doesn't mean that they didn't exist. To be unbiased a similar thing can be said about the 360. Mine works fine, but that doesn't mean the high failure rate is a lie.

Indeed, I have used my Playstation 2 as a DVD Player (allbeit not primary - though for the last 18 months I have) since launch day. It's picture quality isn't brilliant, but as it was only used on my gaming TV it doesn't matter.

It wasn't far off really, the Xbox was a far superior Quality, but as the Playstation 2 was plugged into my TV it was easy (and I never bothered buying the DVD playback dongle for Xbox), especially after my Multiregion DVD player died (RIP good friend).

have to agree here :)

this is one ps3 loving sony fanboy that bought a 360 at the weekend :)

picture quality was crap regardless of wether they played discs or not lol

Firmware updates etc were not available when PS2 and Xbox were released as DVD players. Now things like picture quality aspect ratio support etc can be changed with firmware (as 360 has proven with updates for DVD playback over VGA).

Also I have seen some pictures of HD-DVD, Blu Ray players opened up and these are in essence Pentium 4 style PCs in a small form factor (they have CPUs, fans, PSU, memory etc). The PS3 already has this power under the hood so any issues with playback are more likely to be software based, hence, fixable with firmware updates.

I believe the PSP has also done this by offering newer video formats to be supported via updates.

Also the higher reolution from HD-DVD/Blu Ray will make the picture quality better than any standard DVD so the perceived difference will be much better than what most people have at present. Most people will only own 1 High Definition player for a couple of years. I don't see the price dropping as quickly as it did for DVD players due to the higher cost and requirements to produce hardware capable of playing back the new formats (for the forseeable future). I don't expect to see 30 pound generic players that offer superior playback, which is the case with DVD players for the last couple of years, compared to xbox/ps2 dvd playback.

this is true and also what i believe, i used the ps2 for a dvd player when i first got it but compared to a standalone or my htpc it blows chunks quality wise.

you can't expect a console to deliver as good a quality as a standalone, whether it be playing movies or listening to audio, HD movies will fall into this subpar quality too.

the arrogance of $ony, i've never been a fanboy of anything and i got my ps2 on launch day but i kind of hope the ps3 comes a distant 2nd to the 360....i'm just so sick of reading the same old BS spun out by the $ony propaganda machine.

picture quality on the ps2 was nothing to do with firmware. it was the hardware being used.

As I mentioned, I think hardware wise the PS3's power is above/on par with current HD-DVD players and Blu Ray hardware. The rest is just software, I think.

"My only question for this Christmas on Wii is the price point. Even though it's affordable, at $400 plus whatever you need to buy accessories-wise, I'm guessing you need to spend about $500 to take home a Wii and enjoy it. For this Christmas, I think that price point is still not family entertainment because $500 is a lot to fork out . . . I think the price for what it specifically does as a video games machine is a bit pricey, but I think that their strategy long term we have great respect for."

PS3 = too cheap?
Wii = too expensive?

WTF are they slipping into the water at Sony HQ?

Sony seem to think everyone wants a glorified media player.

I buy a Playstation because I want to play games. I buy a DVD player if I want to play DVD's. This is what Sony seem to have problems understanding.

You really do have to wonder if Sony are actually intentionally trying to stir up some controversy just to get their names in the news. They can’t honestly believe some of the things they have been saying over the last few months, if they do it clearly shows their higher up are completely out of touch with reality.

The PS3 may represent value with Blue Ray, however the DVD playback on the PS2 is awful, so I expect, to keep price down, the HD from the PS3 will be poor, at least in comparison to stand alone Blueray.

Outside of the games press this stuff gets printed in the mainstream as normal news. So when Sony is quoted in the papers saying a Wii is not value for money, and the PS3 does x, y and z, the consumer laps it up and goes and buys one.
