More hypocrisy from Sony

The PS3 may represent value with Blue Ray, however the DVD playback on the PS2 is awful, so I expect, to keep price down, the HD from the PS3 will be poor, at least in comparison to stand alone Blueray.

But at £400 cheaper than a stand alone player, plus being able to play games, surf the internet etc, do you expect it to be picture for picture the exact same?

No of course not. i'm just saying that I will buy a Blue Ray/ HD DVD player and a playstation because I know the picture quality will not be as good. Blue ray on the PS3 is pointless imo, not to mention expensive and a big reason for the massive delays.

Its a nice addition and something they promised from the first onset about 3 or 4 years ago when they said the cell was going to be used.
I agree it has been responsible for the delays but i think we will need the storage, look at dark messiah, thats 10GB, the PS3 can be expecting a life similar to that of the PS2, so whats that 6 years now with probably another 2 still to go? i think people who say we wont need more than DVD9 space in that time are very naive.

eh ? probably missing the point here but how does he get $400 for the Wii, isn't it $250 over in the states ?? So even if you add a few controllers and games it will be less than $500 ???

Its Australian Dollars ;) what he is saying is sure the Wii is $400 but you will need to spend another $100 on peripherals in order to fully enjoy it.
Now not wanting to say the wii is expensive or the PS3 is cheap, but i was surprised at the cash people where spending on their Wii Pre Orders in a thread on here, it made the 360 look like the cheapest console (by quite a bit)

I see it like this:

The wii is going to be 180 over here, with a sports game. The PS3 is 425.

You will need to buy an extra controller for both (if you wanna paly multiplaer games) so lets say, 220 for the wii, and 450 for the PS3. Maybe a classic controler too for the wii, so lets say 250 if you buy 2 of them...

Am I missing anything here?

the way i was seeing it was Wii + controller + 2 Games (not wii sports) £304 from gameplay

People are picking up an xbox 360 with another controller PGR3 plus another game (sometimes 2) for under £300
The 360 looks cheap compaired to a wii, and a Wii is ment to be the cheap option.

But you're gonna need to buy another pad, a memory card adaptor plus the console to enjoy the FULL aspect of PS3 also, which makes it even more expensive.

You will only need a memory card adaptor if you plan on bringing your old game saves with you? its an option they will allow if you want.

The PS3 isnt cheap, what i am saying is the Wii isnt as cheap as it first seems, the 360 is the real bargain

Oh, absolutely, for once I can't argue with you.

I was merely pointing out that Sony were saying for the full freedom of enjoyment using Wii you have to buy extra stuff. But you do with their console also.

The facts in the short term regardless of spec, price etc are this:

When Mummy and Daddy are out shopping for timmys christmas prezzie they will be presented with the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii. They will buy one and a couple of games to put a big smile on his face on christmas morning.

Soo 3 months down the line Timmy will have his new console with a few games and he will be happy. Regardless if he is a brat or not he will not be bothered about the PS3... Even if he is the response will be he has just had a new console.

Sony have dropped the biggest clanger by not having this in the shops for xmas.

Oh well!

I actually do want to own the PS3 and 360... I guess the Wii to.

So far, I wont lie. I am looking forward to the games on the 360 more, (GOW NEEDS to hurry the heck up, as well as lost planet).

Bottom line is, no matter what console you buy, it will end up costing you quite a bit...

Sony seem to be aiming at customers who don't own any technology, and now want to buy a full HD gaming a video system all in one box. Well at least thats the only way someone might justify Sony's 'value for money' claim.

Trouble is these people don't exist.

 you are kidding right?? i must have done something wrong :p

Well that true but again, sony could argue the whole point, the whole ethos being the Wii is playing together, but you can do that online so you need to be in the same room so you need to buy more controllers. You know?
To get the full freedom of any console i guess you want to buy all the bells and whistles, 4 controllers, etc. They would be better attacking the 360 on this front than the Wii, as they can throw in HD-DVD add ons etc etc give it the whole 'if you want the full wireless, online, web surfing, Hi-Def multimedia experience then the PS3 is mucho cheapness compaired to the 360, which is an arguement that is fairly logical, although people will say 'not forced into HD-DVD' but bringing the 2 machines to the same spec the PS3 is cheaper. You know? its just spin really.

Sony are aiming at customers over 16, which is why they shouldnt attack the wii. People 16-30 have so much spare cash its unreal. 16-18 part time job, no uni yet. Minted, maybe 3 poorer years at uni not so minted. 21+ first proper job paying decent cash, not moved outta parents house yet, minted.
Its the reason why ad buys during friends in america where so expensive, because the market that show appealed to had so much play money its unreal.

it doesn't add up to me, personally. Sony want an all in one BDRom machine. They'll also be selling BD players for the home market presumably. Surely, they're in competition with themselfs here? we already know how much loss (roughly) they are gonna make on each console, its also safe to say if people have a ps3 that plays bdroms, and plays them well, that people wont bother buying the standalone players...loosing SONY profit. that leaves a few alternatives in my eyes:

* limit with you can do with the playback on the ps3 so people will still concider buying the players (wouldnt go down well)
* Increase the price so they dont make such a loss (definatly wouldnt go down well)
* dont include bdrom playback at all (which just wont happen)
* do nothing (my bet)

Microsoft on the otherhand, dont produce hd-dvd players so they've got nothing to loose. win-win profit for them.

The same arguement could have been made about the PS2 including DVD drives.
The PS3 will spur on BD player sales. You have a PS3 in the bedroom, nice machine buy some BD movies, quite likies, price in BD players starts to come down a bit, 'welllll need a new DVD player for the living room anyway, make it BD since i got some of those movies' once you get one player in the home (PS3), it will get people buying the media, and thus buying more machines. Dont forget from every BD they sell they get cash from, they make a profit, to cover the PS3 in the house.

yeah but ive been over this before. the ps2's playback was so dire people still went and bought dvd players anyway lol.

This time around, everybody is certain that the ps3 will be a very good bdrom player as rp2000 has said. what do you think they'll do? cripple the playback or let it go?

Yeah but see it sells stand alone players, it gets people building a small collection then saying 'hang on i can get better than this' and buy a player, by then they wont be a grand a piece

They will let it go, it will be most peoples first impression of BD, it will be better than DVD, will do the 1080p. Might not be as good as a £1000 stand alone machine, but i think if you expect it to be, you expect a lot.
