A row has broken out over a golly exhibition at a Hampshire museum.
A collection of golly badges on display in Westbury Manor Museum in Fareham has been criticised for its perceived racist connotations.

Dr John Molyneux, from the University of Portsmouth, said the items should not be regarded simply as a childhood pastime or hobby.

I think I'll break one of the forum rules. Dr Molyneux, **** off

my sister used to have a golly *** when she was younger

"I spent an hour and a half at the museum speaking to people who had come to see the exhibition and no-one had any problems with it."

FFS this is going too far,

did robertsons not have to stop having them on marmalade jars because of this.

bloody political correctness dogooders

poxy country no wonder the bnp is rising in popularity

Surely one needs to be thinking like a racist in order to perceive such a thing as racist? Some people do their own types no favours with crap like this.

Absolutely correct. As I have mentioned several times before the harder these people push their agendas the stronger the backlash will be. I see societal values as a kind of pendulum, push it too far one way and it swings back past the middle the other way. I'm looking forward to what will be a seachange.

Its probably racist and offencive so i wont post it here :(

Well at least Dr Molyneux can go home with that warm feeling thinking he's done the world a favour, punching the air with what he's achieved today.

Go on Dr Molyneux, have another beer on me. You are a tremendous man.

My sentiments exactly. Presumably Dr Molyneux has got nothing better to do with his time than root out perceived racism where none exists - what a total and utter ****

Hit. Nail. Head.

I used to collect the enamel badges from the Jam Jars and I had a load of them. I wore some of them out once and a guy came over and had a massive go at me (I was about 10/11) calling me all kinds of horrible names and I was so upset that I ran all the way home and never wore them ever again.

I had no idea or perception of them being racist or abusive towards black people but what I did have was a memory of a massive bloke having a go at me despite me being a tiny 10 year old child :/

One single person has complained about the exhibit. This person has expressed concern that the toys have had perceived racist connotations associated with them in the past and is encouraging people not to forget this fact when considering their appropriateness as childrens' toys.

What on earth is wrong with that? Are you saying that this man should not have the right to lodge a complaint about the racist connotations he believes are associated with an exhibit?

I'm more disgusted that this "dispute" has made the news than the fact that it has actually taken place.

Reporting articles like this really do encourage the PC brigade to step up. It's pretty absurd and a little crazy to be honest.

Hey Spie, no breaking the forum rules! :p
