more RAM vs faster RAM?

Hi all,

Is there any benefit to having more RAM (i.e. 16 or 32gb 1333mhz) compared to faster RAM (8gb 2400mhz)?

This is strictly for a gaming machine which is probably not hitting 8gb usage.

If the only benefit is file caching hard disk in memory, is this still worthwhile on SSDs?

1333MHz is too slow. 2400MHz is too fast. :) Aim at something like 2133CL10 or even a cheaper 1866 CL9 kit on offer, both usually overclock and you will be able to raise the frequency/tighten the timings, tt very much depends on the price and current availability. What is your current system? Even Ivy Bridge cannot guarantee you that it will hit 2400MHz stable. For a gaming system 8GB is enough you will hit something closer very rarely.
 
It's a balancing act. Which brand/model is the RAM you have already?
I got a Crucial 16GB kit that does 1866@CL8 quite nicely.

Personally if it's strictly gaming only I'd probably go the fastest 8GB kit you have.

How about if its 1600 is that to slow now aswell....i am wondering if you can overclock the 1333 memory you have ...
 
Genuine question- How can RAM be too fast?

I think its a balance- 8GB is still plenty so I'd rather have 8GB of DDR3 2133MHz than 16GB of 1333MHz. However, 4GB isn't really enough these days so I'd go for 8GB of 1333MHz over 4GB of 2133MHz.
 
Anything over tight cl82133 can be slower. I've seen people doing LN2 runs with 2666 net slower physics scores than me as they're running average timings. You need to go really tight to notice a gain.

Cl9 2400 for 24/7 tops. 16gb is the sweet spot currently. Little harder with 4 channels but doable

May I only ask - why? :D I would sell them all and buy a decent 2133/2400MHz 2x8GB kit. :D Otherwise if for some reason you want to keep them all it's hard to decide which is better due to the sheer amount of choice you have. I would try to overclock any of the 8GB sticks to go past 1600CL9.
