Morientes

i started a similar thread on a liverpool forum i go on (red and white kop) along these lines which provoked some great discussion.

Rafa's style of play revolves around a team ethos, with the goals coming from everywhere. Look at his Valencia sides, players chipped in from all over the field. Granted, Mista did a lot to help things but goals came from all over the field. He doesn't really go for an out and out goalscorer, just someone who can hold the ball up to allow the midfield to join in the attack. Hence the signing of luis garcia, who is in the mould of pablo aimar. (albeit a slightly broken mould!)

Some of the problems we have at the moment are based upon the fact that our strikers like the team to play to them, espciallly Cisse, as opposed to the striker playing for the team. Moro and Crouch aren't really link players, they like to attack balls into the box or poach chances inside the 6 yard box. They are being asked to play too deep. Cisse likes the ball over the top but he is being asked to play right wing.

With that all said and done, Morientes was particularly poor yesterday and missed some glaring sitters. He has been like that since his arrival. I think Cisse and Moro will go if and only if Rafa can get two replacement strikers. He doesn't rate Pongolle, Mellor or Le Tallec so it is a case of 'all change' up front. Which brings me on to the next question, who do you bring in?

Michael Owen is the first name to leap from many Kopite's lips but I do not think he is the answer. He spends far too much time injured and has burnt his bridges with us. I wouldn't object to his return but do not think he is the saviour. David Villa, Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt or even Mista of Valencia are all people I would love to see in the Liverpool shirt. And for my surprise selection, Mido of Spurs/Roma. I think Mido is a great player and if he could curb his attitude he could be even better.

I'm getting more and more fed up with Crouch though, he just doesn't have it imo.

Seems like Rafa has come down with a case of the 'Fergusons' where he becomes to stubborn to the fact he's right and will prove it... eventually.
As a Man Utd fan we get it all the time (4-1-4-1, Fletcher, Carroll, Rooney as a winger, Scholes still having 'it' and many, many more).

Mido is not going to happen, Kuyt and Villa are favourites. Torres is not going to happen.

Moro IS a good player, infact a great player. Just not sure the premiereship is the place for him.

I really like Garcia. He's good to watch and he doesn't panic under pressure. I'm getting more and more fed up with Crouch though, he just doesn't have it imo.

In fact watching us is bad, cos it's like it gets to the midfield then.....nothing.

Garcia misfires, he tries to do too much, too many fancy flicks but yet it doesn't always work.

Crouch though he was awesome (man of the match) yesterday and really did well. He is definately good enough for Liverpool, and good enough for the England squad.

Cisse gets a stinging from rafa everygame he doesnt score/play well, when hes a much better player than morientes and morientes couldnt put a ball in a plane hanger, and nothing is said. Something is wrong somewhere imo. :(

Garcia is annoying a lot of the time, but he does seem to cause defences a lot more problems than our other upfront players - uptil Kewells recent return to a bit of form anyway. If Crouch could head the ball half as well as Garcia he would be unstoppable :)

I really hope Crouchie proves me wrong. I think he's a great worker, but he's just missing something at the mo (imo). I hope he does turn it around, maybe he's not got the service, i don't know, but we need to do something. I have seen flashes of brilliance, but flashes aint good enough for LFC, we need sustained talent. Bring it on Crouchie :D

I totally agree. The one key difference between the two teams is pace. His Valencia team had pace all over the park but the current Liverpool side doesn't. We're currently far too slow when we attack teams. It would've been interesting to see how many goals Owen would've scored if he had stayed and played under Benitez. I don't think he would've scored as many as he did under Houllier but at least it would've given us a benchmark to rate our current strikers.

I've never understood why everyone plays the ball to Cisse down the right. When he played at Auxerre the majority of passes were played through the middle, either along the floor or over the top allowing him to use his pace and run on to them and score. I can't remember more than one or two times when similar balls have been played to him at Liverpool. His pace has been completely wasted. I feel sorry for him and don't think he's been treated very well, by the current management, especially when you consider the level of support Morientes has received.

Yeah i didn't rate Crouch at first, thoguht he was a terrible signing, but he's done great now i think, he may not have scored many, but he plays well, and he's good in the air, was unlucky agaisnt City, thought he had a blinding game, he's a good team player. :)

Yeah Morro definately aint found his feet yet, i don't understand why he doesn't give Cisse a chance tbh.

I also think Morientes is a good player, but it can take some players a while to get accustomed to the Premiership, maybe you'll see more out of him next season.

Il wager you five whole english pounds he isnt even there next season.

It's true, you thought being 6ft7 he would [ractice his headers. Scored a good one against UTD though.

He's found his feet, links up very well with *** team, looks dangerous lately. Him and Fowler up front should be a winner

Crouchy, as much as i love the lad, is too tall and too weak to be a good header of the ball, thats why he is so good with his feet, the flick that he nearly scored with on sunday was a real deft touch.

I was one of the one booing moro, when he signed i though we had gotten ourselves a real superstar, i swear we have got the wrong Fernando Morientes, we must have his bloody sister or summat, the guy has lost every facet of his game, touch, shooting ability, even his movement, tbh id rather have neil mellor back and upfront rather than any of our current strikers.

I for one definately dont want mickey back at the club, he is a crock and a mercenary imo.Dunno who else is out there mind good strikers are thin on the ground.

tbh if he was going to acclimatise to the PL he would have done so by now, however, I am prepared to give him till the end of the season. I think he needs somebody more prolific beside him, and so does crouch to be honest. You can tell by his touches outside of the box he is quality, he just seems to lack any confidence inside the box :(

Agreed, Owen should never get to wear the Liverpool Jersey again.

The day we bought Moro i was so overjoyed that i ordered the new home jersey with his name on it. Goes nicely along with my Carragher and Kewell top. But alas, he is a superstar... has been for Lyon and Real, but just not for Liverpool.
He shall be departing in the summer, with Cisse. Defoe and Kuyt and VIlla apparently have been ear marked in.
