Morissons store policy

I did not give my consent for them to be held or passed to a third party as this is against the DPA.
No it's not.

a) If I had walked off and they had tried to detain me, not only would that have been assault, but also false imprisonment?
Detaining doesn't amount to assault. Assault requires actual, or fear of, violence. Whether it would amount to false imprisonment would depend on whether you consented to the detainment, but the security guard was never going to hold you out the back, but more likely walk you off the premises if you did cause a scene.

b) When does store policy over ride personal liberty and forces the employee to commit a criminal and/or civil offence?
Nothing you've described could give rise to a civil action or is a criminal offence.

What are your thoughts?
As with everyone else, I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill here and could have handled it much better.

This is where it gets dodgy and I can't find the law.
It's for any tv tuning device, which would include a fair few DVD devices as they can and do contain tv tuners, but on the other hand most don't. Without knowing the precise law it's hard to tell.

I would have thought it would just be for anything that has a tv tuner and certain staff UN aware what in what.
However look at OP replies a/b both are completely BS

So admitting you are ignorant of the law, you then carry on and say replies a/b are completely bs. Hmmm...

Thanks, you need to google the correct thing to find it. Well that clears that up. You need to give details on certain DVD devices.

OP has a rubbish attitude and chip on his shoulder. I mean assault lol. If your unhappy get a refund.

What is is called in Bristol then? Its called assault in the real world and thats quite some attitude you have there, you make assumptions based on nothing more than opinion and to boot throw in a nice personal insult. Great.

TV, yes. DVD player, no.

OP had a bit of a complex regardless. Get over it and stop harassing the staff.

WTF? Ok, so someone stops you leaving the store with your wife and child for no good reason and detains you there, you will just bow down and take it like the good sheeple you are? How in gods name am I harassing the staff?

The information must be relevant.... Yes it is.

He stood behind me blocking my exit. I am not going to ask if he intends to assault me or what his intentions are.

According to an article I found on google, it is a civil and/or criminal action.

How would I have handled it better? Not posting? I stood there and waited for her supervisor to tell her that it wasn't required. Pray tell what would you have done? Bowed down and kissed her feet, while giving her your card details and pin number?

It is not called assault and never has been, u lawful imprisonment maybe, but unlikely.

You know there are several different laws being discussed there.

Bow down hardly. As said ask for a manager and say they don't need details, failing that a refund and leave.

You have a chip on your shoulder and it's no good. You just make situations worse to spite your face.

I didn't need to, she very loudly shouted across to one in the middle of the floor after I advised her I didn't need a tv licence for watching dvds. How have I made the situation worse?

They told you prior to providing the information what it would be used for and that it would be passed you a third party. In any case, gathering the information with the customer's consent could almost never be against the DPA (assuming they're registered with the data commissioner).

He can stands where he likes. Did you really think he was going to attack you? No, of cause you didn't.

I've found an article on google saying we're all slaves to a secret brotherhood of lizard-men. You'll forgive me for paying little attention to some random (incorrect) site you found through Google.

You can keep your rolleyes thanks. As most have said, if you felt uncomfortable you should have just given false details. There's no duty on you to provide accurate details.

Similar thing happen to me last week, went to buy a xbox for my nephew, they wanted my details, as apparently you need a tv licence to use one.

Store staff told me it's classed as 'Television-receiving equipment', therefore you need a tv licence.

Wow

Im actually tempted to go to my local Morrisons and buy a dvd player just to see what happens...if they dont do anything then just walk out and walk back in and get a refund..and if they do, tell them where to go and walk out anyway and see what happens..then walk back in and get a refund regardless. :D

Am I evil?
