I'd say most people don't have a huge amount in common with their parents, especially when growing up most children actively oppose their parents likes because it's not 'cool'.

I think the main thing was how little the fellow they followed seemed to be 'enjoying' the experience. And unless they followed a load and picked the worst (which I doubt, on the kind of budget it looked to have) then that doesn't seem massively unrepresentative.
