Mormons

My uncle, auntie and cousins are Mormon. I think my cousins are drifting away as they are now in their 20's but my uncle converted when he met my auntie. To be honest it almost never comes up as my side of the family aren't religious, he is successful and owns his own business. I would say he is a very intelligent man, very reasonable and driven so not the most obvious choice but it works for him and his wife. You wouldn't know he was unless it was bought up in conversation.

I always think the religions leaders are the ones more likely to not be as honest and have large bank accounts but most followers have faith and are good honest people. And as long as they don't push it on me I have no problem with them.

If nothing else this thread is educating GD.

Anyone who didn't know what Mormon pants look like have now googled them :)

They're weird (the pants I mean, not Mormons, though thinking about it they're quite weird too).

We have several LDS churches where I live, with another being built. I have held several conversations with a couple of missionaries who were polite and well spoken, one was an American Girl who was unreasonably attractive. They were all willing to listen to my views and express there own without any hint of accusation or enmity. They were nice company in fact.

While I find their interpretation of Christianity to be somewhat off kilter with Scripture and the Book of Mormon according to Joseph Smith having no real basis in Christianity and designed to appeal to American Nationalism, the LDS members themselves are inoffensive, polite and do quite a bit of charity in the community so I treat them with the respect they show everyone else.

Yeah ran into 2 of them as I was walking home a couple of months back were very polite and explained who they were and what they were doing before trying to push anything religious.

Not really bothered if thats a way of life someone has choosen for themselves but I do feel for people born into it who may not be interested its quite a thing to get away from if its been your whole life upto that point.

This has been my experience.

Met quite a few, my wife works with one and she has a long standing offer to work at BYU (which is a whole different story of weirdness).

Very quirky, and stands for everything I despise about organized religion. At the same time every Mormon I have met has been amongst the friendliest, kindest, well mannered, well spoken, courteous, bright, intelligent, happy, positive and supportive people I have ever met. I've been to Mormon central a few time (passing through SLC/Provo, been on BYU campus) and they are all amazingly beautiful people.

But they are just insane and it is very sad to see such levels of indoctrination. At least these days a vast majority are utterly harmless and are great people to live with. The whole multiple wives thing is mostly a thing of the past except for so e even more crazy whacks.

If they weren't quite so crazy I might be living in Utah and have many as friends!

We've occasionally had to organize something social with some Mormons, it it is so hard- happy hour beers, nope, wine and appetizers, nope, coffee and cake, nope, tea and scones, nope.

i had some of these people talk to me on the train, he was actually a really nice bloke. He wasnt sure where he was going, so i approached him rather than him collaring me.

we obviously got chatting he bought up the whole religion thing, i told him i wasn't interested in ghost stories or fairytales, we agreed to disagree over it, then we carried on talking about other things. An old bloke got on the train and had lost his ticket, so i paid for him as it was only 8 quid. the mormon actually gave me half the money to help even after trying to tell him i didnt need it.

he was from Germany and other than the misguided beliefs that have been forced on him, he was a top bloke.

How do you know his beliefs were forced on him?

because he told me that he was bought up as a mormon, so doesnt see any other reason not to believe (you know, like having a non biased education etc)

he knows no better as its all he has been subjected to, he has been told believing in anything else is wrong.

I was accosted by two of these fellows on the bus a few months back. The buggers with the white shirts, black trousers and back packs.

Bit more information. After they'd tried to get me to believe their fairy tales, I tried to win them over with science and common-sense. They didn't seem to know what to do when questioned, so they handed me this...

..told me to read and then they got off at the next stop.

I haven't read it yet.

It sounds like a big ponzi scheme to be honest.

I can also tell you that the no sexual activity is ignored by some.

This, the Mormon Church is unbelievably wealthy and they donate very little of it to any kind of charitable cause.

Even by religious standards they are bloody mental.

For me it's obvious what is going on. It's basically just a positive thinking tool. Everyone likes to feel like they are part of a community and one you believe is spreading positivity and helping to save people from hell is going to make you feel really good.

Getting out of bed in the morning for a dull day day at work is a lot easier if you believe a loving supernatural being has your back and wants you to spread the word and be happy. Being part of something bigger than yourself always feels great it is just a psychological fact.

Faith is the power of belief just like a placebo.
