Moronic cyclists

You saw them.

In fact - you quite possibly saw them because they were riding three abreast.
Ah, so because they couldn't be bothered to fit proper lights for the conditions they resort to disregarding the highway code in order to be seen? Very considerate and responsible

EDIT: Lets get this straight, I'm usually quite considerate towards cyclists and will leave them plenty of space when overtaking and even make sure there's space inside me when in queueing traffic and I know there's one coming up behind.

What I expect is a little consideration in return, but what I see far too often is a totally selfish attitude. Far too many cyclists seem to think that the rules don't apply to them, or that they can ignore them in the name of supposed increased safety. To show indignance at being accused of acting like you own the road, yet to then claim you're totally justified in ignoring the rules of those same roads is hypocritical in the extreme. Obey the rules of the road or don't use it.

Realistically, how much time to you lose due to "slow cyclists that need to be passed"?

10 seconds, maybe 15?

Oh dear, that must really impact upon your journey doesn't it?

It may not be much, be a lot more if you didn't pass them, and any overtaking manuvere (spelling?) is potentially dangerous, can be arkward as well, say you're on a double lane bit of road between junctions and its busy, you have got to be on the lookout for a gap in the other lane, and then take it, of course anyone should be able to do this, but this kind of thing does not make for a relaxing drive

LED lights are perfectly visible provided people actually pay attention in the first place. I can always see cyclists when I'm in cars. I use a 3 LED rear light, and a halogen spotlight up front. I don't have issues being seen to do with my lights- but in fog, I do much prefer being two abreast to help my visibility. In fact most of the issues with being seen come down more to motorists not looking than not seeing.

Again - you try it. It's ****ing scary sometimes riding on busy roads, because car drivers, although they see you, ignore you. The amount of times I've been cut up, shouted at, tooted, nearly hit, REVERSED INTO, nearly barged off the road by people who are looking out of their side window right at me, doesn't bear thinking about. People see you, and half of them think 'it's only a cyclist, he'll move'.

Self preservation.

I used to cycle 10 miles to and from college every day for about 8 months. I'll never do it again! I just didn't feel safe on the roads.

Now I'm a car driver, I don't really mind cyclists who are riding in single file. I always give them plenty of room while passing them, and if I'm approaching some traffic lights and know I'll put the cyclist in danger, I'll just hang back and wait until I can get a safe passing distance.

It's just the idiots who ride next to each other that annoy me. I gave a pair of them a quick beep of my horn once (and I'm talking just a very short double press to indicate my presence). They reacted by speeding up and blocking my car when I got to the end of the road. ******* idiots!

I do that too. Immature, yes. But if we get beeped and it's not our fault? Well if you do, and we can get in your way.. we will.

If the cycle lanes over here where worth using, i would happily use them. But they tend to be glorified footpaths.

I dont see why a cyclist should be treated any differant to a tractor or a slow car.

And in this instance where it was thick fog, perhaps they deliberatly went 3 abrest so people might actually see them. I know when im driving and its thick fog my eyes are firmly on the cats eyes, and rarely on the inside where a cyclist would be.

This is why you get run over. Plank.

Yeah, I've totally been run over loads of times.

Fact of the matter is, if some **** decides that me being on the road, at the side, with my mates, single file, minding my own business, is reason enough to actually move over CLOSER to us to intimidate us, or parp at us, or wind down the window and abuse us, then whatever he gets is fair game. It's included kicked doors and egged windows in the past.

Flame away. I don't care.

Also, good job on the personal insult. I see you can be big and clever too :)

Maybe its time we admitted there is a time and a place for pedalling a bicycle along at 15mph - and that time is not rush hour and that place is not a foggy NSL road.

You got anything to add to that, big fella?

Because I know what I said :)

Also, as a motorcyclist, you should be well aware what it's like to be semi invisible in broad daylight, to be unseen, and to have people try and get in your way for no good reason...

Take away all the horsepower of your motorbike..

Take away all the noise it makes..

Reduce your silhouette by at least 50%..

It's not all that nice being a cyclist sometimes.

I have no problem with 75% of cyclists, its the selfish idiots that make up the other 25% that get on my nerves. Its bad enough you don't need to pay road tax, or have insurance, or take a test, so don't be surprised if we're a bit upset when you decide the rules of the road don't apply to you and ride how you like.

If the rules say single file, then you should ride single file. A big flashing blue light and a siren would make me more visable, and probably a bit safer, but the rules say I'm not allowed one, so I haven't fitted one.

I think you'll find that I said I don't mind the responsible riders who ride in single file. I'll keep well clear of them and give them plenty of room.

I wasn't beeping at the guys riding next to each other in anger, just a bit of a warning beep to show that I was having to move out quite far onto the other side of the road to pass them, and they react by trying to block my car in.

I wouldn't have played silly buggers with you if you'd done that. It's the aggressive people who are frustrating.

I no doubt come across as somewhat militant in this thread - I'm really not - but you have to do some things that aren't by the book on a bike just to save your own skin sometimes.

So why do it?

I enjoy it, despite the bad bits. I can't drive. I hate busses. I do it to keep in shape (well nearer to in shape than otherwise!) and I do it for recreation. A lot of my riding's not on the road. We've been riding a lot on the road lately, but mostly because the woods are too sloppy to be any fun at the moment. Also we need to get to where we want to ride at.

I wouldn't do that because some mad bugger wouldn't see me and I'd get run over. agw_01 was perfectly justified in beeping at those riders. For that he should be harassed, the cyclists knowing that should any damage occur to either party the courts will blame the driver? You cyclists are as bad as the hoodies that hang around my local off-licence as far as I'm concerned, you know the law is on your side and you play up to it. Bicycles should be on the pavements or on cycle lanes which a cycle tax should pay for.

PS plank is an insult? I can see why you have so many problems on the road if you take such things quite so much to heart.

If I'm cycling anywhere (which is quite rare), if there is a cycle lane on the path or road I'll use that, if not, I'll use the road round quiet housing estates etc where there is hardly any cars, but if the road is something like a 40 mph main road or something like that, i'll use the pavement and just be careful of predestrians, most will let you past (I know I certainly do if I'm walking somewhere), I'm not in danger of being run over on the pavement, I'm not causing a tail back on the path, and its far easier for me to go round the occasional predestrian than for a constant stream of cars to go past me.

technically illegal, yes, but safer for me, and less invenient for other people
