Morons reducing speed limits

Same here, it started with a village I go through dropping to 20 outside the school (that I can accept) with one set of speed bumps, then they changed them (and removed some) as they were too noisy or something. The speed up to that point from my house was 30 (just in the village), nsl, 40,30, 20 (the school bit) and then back upto 40 with a national speedlimit shortly after. Now its 30, 50 (no damned reason), 30 (40 was fine), 20, (the school bit), 30 plus a new 40, 30 section which has never been needed up until some busy body moaned. It adds nearly a quarter of the time extra onto my journey, even worse if you get stuck behind the will not go anywhere near the limit tourest brigade we seem to get out this way.
In reality it's made no difference, theres been no change in level of accidents (there were hardly any) and nobody actually sticks to the speedlimits, not even the police

My mate stepped out of a taxi on an A road as he felt ill that had recently been reduced to 50mph and just as he stepped out of the car another taxi came round the corner and hit him at 50mph.

If he had been doing 60mph I dont think my mate would be here to tell the tail, he was lucky and got away with a scarred head and a broken femur.

He is just recovering now.

Loads of councils are currently going through a speed limit review which is supposed to see if limits should go up or down but so far I've only seen them go down.

I have yet to hear of a single story of the limit being raised, at this rate all roads will be 10mph pretty soon

but why should speed limits on ROADS be reduced because people are walking around on them?

How about teach people that roads are DANGEROUS?

Unfortunately this is happening pretty much everywhere now.
Not much anyone can do about it though, because if you complain you're automatically a speed-loving child killer for supporting faster speed limits.

Sadly, councils and the government are too afraid to blame the real causes of accidents (bad driving) and tackle them, as it's too broad and will impact the core voting base too much. Lying to the electorate and employing false road safety policies that are proven not to work is seen as a much better alternative, even when it costs lives/injuries.

Edit: Just to prove it...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7854774.stm

The number of speeding prosecutions and fines has increased sevenfold in ten years, figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show.

Conservative MP Mark Field's request found speed camera offences rose from 262,000 in 1996 to 1,865,000 in 2006.

The Cities of London and Westminster MP told BBC 2's Daily Politics he wanted the "pendulum turned back to the long suffering motorist".

If the speeding clampdown was effective in a road safety sense, we'd not have seen the trend change showing road safety improving more slowly...

So we should all drive slower simply because people like your mate are incapable of engaging bragin before opening car doors?

Why dont we have a man with a white flag in front of every car incase your mate comes out of the pub drunk?

Your mate is an idiot, a lucky one, but still an idiot. We shouldn't have to punish the general public because of morons.

One thing I've thought about with this 'lowering' of NSL roads to 50mph, although this means cars now have to do 50 instead of 60, surely it now means HGVs can do 50 instead of 40? Would've thought this would be a lot more dangerous/risky??

There is probably a reason behind it. Guv if you really want to find out I happen to know that the Transport section for Warwickshire is located above the library in Warwick. Go ask them.

Aero

EDIT: you could always ask to see accident records as well.

A road just round the corner from me has recently been reduced from 30mph to 20, which the added pleasure of some shiny new speed bumps. There'd never been an accident on this road (at least there hasn't in the 20 years I've been here) before it was done, but a month after, a boy got hit by a car while trying to do jumps over the bumps on his bike
