Mortal Kombat (2011)

I will take a simplistic view on the popularity of fighting games as follows:
By the activity on the respective thread of that game on OCUK :D

Till this day. SF4 thread is still abuzz with activity, but the last post for MvC3 was 14th April.

SF4/SSF4 wins :)

I feel that Mortal Kombat gameplay still comes nowhere near Street fighter gameplay.

I believe that's because SF4 was the first fighting game that many of those ppl spent a fair bit of time on, and they can't get used to something totally different.
MVC3 is more fun than SF4, but SF4 is the better game I think.
I expect interest in MK9 to die off like it did with mvc3. On OcUK.

All I can say is that in my opinion the gameplay is more fun than either SF4 or MVC and thats going to keep me playing for a long time. I'm not sure what tornament players look for but there does seem to be a bit of snobbery when it comes to Mortal Kombat. Sounds like some people have the perfect idea what a fighter should entail and the littlest deviation from that makes the game unworthy.

How is it? I love the fatalities but the gameplay feels quite awkward, once you get past seeing all the fatalities the first few times it just gets kinda..boring

What I like about MK is the story mode, lobby system and unlock stuff is great. I hope whatever new fighting games come out do similar stuff. The fighting system isn't all that though.

Your ignorance is hilarious.

im coming from a blazblue, sf background myself, and to write this game off since it may not become a tourny favourite is frankly pathetic. 1% of players (if even that) will even bother with tournament play. the rest want a game thats fun, engaging and most of all worth playing.

whether you want to believe it or not sf has many problems wrong with it, especially if you compare to BB, and the same goes for MK compared to SF but it doesnt make it a **** game.

If you think i'm ignorant just because i bashed mvc3 then more lol to you....i would love to know who actually plays that game anymore , because none of my friends do, no tourny players i know do and its effectively been left to collect dust.

to be honest not many ocuk member play mvc3 to start with. because none of them wants to learn a different fighting game, other than fireball, jump and shoryuken:(

despite the glitches mvc3 is still a pretty well made game, everyone can kill anyone with one combo if you are good:). as jwong have shown on the wednesday fight night stream, you can win with anyone, hence a very exciting game.

as is your arrogance.

Screw SF4/SSF4/MvC3/MK. Here is where its at!

*Fetches the popcorn, passes some over to adz, vian and arth*

Having only played the tutorial on Wednesday night what I will say is that the characters look/move/feel clunky/mechanical to me. It doesn't seem very fluid compared to other games of the genre. What will make or brake how much I play it though, is online. I care little for the single player aspect of fighting games and prefer to play against others.

The complaints here look more to me that people can't get used to this engine after playing the Capcom beat 'em ups for some time, I have no issues with the engine whatsoever it's got plenty of pros and cons just like both SSFIV and MvC3. The people saying it feels clunky and awkward from what I can tell from browsing the forums are peeps who have played a lot of SSFIV and MvC3 and the style of play on them games are much faster so I'm not really surprised you are finding this 'awkward' because the pace certainly is a a lot slower.

So it's like this, if you don't like the engine that's a shame cause some of beat 'em up guys on here are really talented players and they would make the tournaments really entertaining but personally I have no issues with the engine of course there are things that need improved but I'm hoping NRS stay on top of that. I cannot comment on online play yet for obvious reasons but I'm praying it's good, it would make a very good game almost perfect in my eyes.

All I would say is that it badly needs the run button to be implemented ala mk3

That would be nice yeah.

By the way has anyone seen Shao Kahn's fatality? :O I had no idea he had one, I'm assuming all the bosses have 1 because the round doesn't end when they beat you like in the old days it goes to the fatality sequence. He had beat me quite a few times in arcade mode over the last few days but last night was the first time he finished me, I'll not ruin it for anybody but it's pretty brutal.

It being slower is probably why I find it awkward, the animations look awkward and it just has a weird feeling to it on the whole.

I don't think it's me having a hard time adjusting to the engine, I adjusted to Tekken 6 alright and MvC3. (despite hating Tekken for other reasons)

I'm not writing the game off completely but it's just not up there with others for me, I'm not that surprised it won't have staying power really. It is some nostalgia though, I used to love playing Sektor on 3.

What's the lobby system like?

Has spectating and a way to rate the stuff people do in-game, with words and numbers. Best off looking at a video of it though, it's really quite cool.

1 - As I said, for single player and for mucking around it's fantastic, so we agree there.

2 - It's not ****, it's just not going to last long as a competitive game. It looks like you're putting BB on the pedestal you're accusing others of putting SF on.

3 - I don't like MvC3, but it's by far the most popular in 2 out of the 3 major competitive regions in the UK, and not far off in the third. Out of curiosity, who are these tournament players you speak of?

Yeah that's fair enough, I'm definitely not saying the game is perfect I was just taking a stab at why you and a few others may be finding it weird. I played a lot of SSFIV but not so much MvC3, thankfully I'm adjusting fine the only guy who is a favourite of mine that I can't get the hang of yet is Raiden just need to put more work in with him I suppose. If you loved Sektor in 3 you'll love him in this aswell, he's even more dangerous in this game I would say.

My local asda store do game tradeins so I'm pretty tempted to take a few titles down there and trade them for this game. Just gotta decide what will fetch the best price lol
