******* Mortal Online Thread *******

Update from the MO forums:

Stresstest tonight 20th of January , at 21.30 gmt +1. Community Manager will update the thread with more information.

Client is roughly 3GB and I got good torrent speeds so still time to grab it.

I've had my eye on this off-and-on for the past few years and it looks like it is shaping up nicely. I loved UO, played it for over 7 years and enjoyed every minute of it. I am so sick of the way MMO's these days spoonfeed people everything. Gone are the days of taking care of things yourself, doing whatever you want, wandering around for a laugh or with a purpose in mind. I miss that, and no MMO out recently can recapture it. It's just quest after quest after quest with little kiddies running around in their uber gear without a care in the world. The only thing they have to whine about is if they think their class is underpowered, or if the servers go down for a day. Shame. They wouldn't survive 5 minutes in UO's Felucca, and if MO can capture that same feeling, then I'm gonna be there like a shot :)

Pity I am out tonight so I'll miss the stress test. Anyone know how long the test will last? Is it just tonight, or for a few days?

Can any ex-UO players (Trammelites need not apply) let us old-school UO lovers know how it is shaping up?

KK guys, according the the MO forums there will be another stress test tonight at 8pm

Remember, anyone can join, you just need to sign up to the website. If you haven't already got the client downloaded then good luck with that because... It's only about 2gb of compressed stuff but it took me all day to download. It was DL'ing at about 40kbps the whole day then shot up to almost 900kbps after yesterdays stress test had already finished. Prolly worth downloading it anyway just incase they do another stress test.

Oh and "hey everyone" I'm new here :D

An Amazing game been addicted to the beta for the past couple weeks now ever since i pre ordered the game, its hard to explain how good it is really, you can do just about anything and be just about anything.

Still need to fix some bugs and tweak the combat a bit but its shaping up really nicely.

So what's it closest to? Is it anything like Oblivion? Any similarities between MO and other MMO's?

It'll be closest to MMO's like Ultima Online. It uses a skill-based system rather than being class-based and level-based. Open-world PvP was UO's forte (until Trammel was patched in). I'm hoping that this game implements that very well. The skill-based system will be similar to Oblivion in that to actually gain skill you have to use that skill over and over.

So does pre-ordering get you in the beta?

I guess the best thing I can do is to describe my first hour in-game. I wandered about a lot feeling confused, tamed a weasel, killed another guy's weasel, got into a fight with him, killed him and took his stuff, crafted some armour and a bow which I couldn't shoot properly (don't think I had the skills), bought a book and started to study it (which I think increases your skills), tried and failed to cast a healing spell, learnt how to snoop in someones backpack, tried to steal something and got killed by the guards.

Sound familiar? :)

I had a good couple of hours on it last night and as an ex-UO player and huge fan of sandbox mmos I think it shows promise and has a definite UO feel to it but it is very rough around the edges and in need of further development. The world itself looks fantastic and makes you want to head out and explore however they do need to implement more content as it does feel a bit empty. Also 'hardcore' doesn't necesarily have to mean unfriendly and certain things, most notably trading with vendors, really should be made simpler. There also isn't much in the way of help when it comes to crafting and finding arour way around. I'm sure signposts and help text will be implemented at some stage because they are needed. I much prefer an mmo not to hold your hand every step of the way but MO could do with being a little more user friendly otherwise it will put people off.
Combat was fun and exciting if a little clunky. When I fought someone on a horse he kept knocking me to the ground which was pretty cool.
The character models could do with a bit of work and the UI is basic but functional. The targeting system, to be perfectly honest, is crap - shift targeting and a first person view with no crosshair mean its quite difficult to know who you've targeted. A crosshair and an icon above the target's head would be nice additions.

Overall I liked what I saw but if they're planning to release it in the next few months (was supposed to be this month but I can't see that happening) then they're going to have to be put in a serious shift to get it tidied up and the world filled in. I really hope it succeeds because a big developer wouldn't have the balls to create this kind of game anymore thanks to the sanitised, spoon-fed style of mmos that bring in the cash. MO will always be niche product which is a shame because if it had a bigger budget and a larger dev team it would be awesome. It may still be very good, just have to wait and see.

Yes I believe it does.

I got an invited for a stress test tonight at 9pm, how big is the download?

About 2gb, which has been said 2-3 in this thread already :p
But ... I could only download at about 40kbps yesterday, then it went up to about 900kpbs at 1 in the morning. So don't count on seeing the game today.

OMG now I seriously WANT to play this game. It sounds pretty bang on for an ex-UO player. All the stuff I loved from UO has been mentioned in your opening post :)

I guess a pre-order might be on the cards soon :)

The fact that this is all in the game completely overshadows the necessity for them to polish it all up and add extra bits to it. I'm sure they'll be right on that once the very essence of the game has been sorted properly. This definitely sounds like a reincarnation of the old UO :)

Just managed to find a direct download link for the client. Currently downloading at 2.1MB / sec :D

I'll be on this soon :)

Is the stress for tonight only?

Hope not because I am not going to get a chance to try tonight and would love to see how this is shaping up and whether it stands any chance of truly recapturing the awesome days I had in UO.

guys getting excited about this game please wait until release/youve played the game, everyone who i have heard from who has played it has said flash graphics and a great underlying idea but its nowhere near ready for launch, just play darkfall, might not be as pretty but it does hardcore pvp much better

Is there a darkfall trial available yet?

Sure, play Darkfall if you want a hardcore pvp game it does do that better but it offers very little else. The beauty of UO, and I hope MO once its done, is the freedom to do whatever you want. Darkfull is just pure pvp and be prepared to put in some serious work before you become competitive. MO may not be finished or even as polished as Darkfall was at this stage but if they can bring all their ideas together it will offer a lot more.
