I need an encryptian software that works on all version of windows without needing any software installed and basically just asks for the password when clicking on the drive name.

If it works in Linux even better.
And a Mac OSX alternative please.

Thanks.

I run a small computer repair shop, and I backup customers data onto USB hard disks.

So instead of installing software on every PC I want to back up, I just want to put in a password when I plug in the hard drive.

Bitlocker is the closest thing but i can't claim to have used it, I think it might use keys instead of passwords. Installing true crypt would likely be best thing to do.

TrueCrypt.

You can set it up so that it doesn't need to be installed on every computer.

On their website, it tells you how to do this.

Its also pretty much uncrackable, so make sure you remember the password.

I use it, and it comes in pretty useful, however I just use containers... haven't tried the portable version before!

Hope it helps.

Why do you keep the data?

Surely after doing the re-install and verifying that the data is back on the PC/Laptop you should then delete the data from your drives, unless keeping a backup for the customer is part of the deal.

because sometimes I finished backing up but I haven't started doing the reinstall so leave it overnight or over the weekend .on our system.

Will try truecrypt out.
thanks
