I'm just sticking this thread up as its for my brother really as he doesn't have an account on here, he just wants to know whats are some of the most economical cars available. Presumably its going to be a diesel and 60+MPG.
He's seen the 1.3 Corsa CDTi does something like 64MPG. Are there any other cars, within the like last 5-6 years old that give as much MPG as he does a heck of lot of motorway driving an. Preferably something that doesnt cost the earth to buy either and in possibly a bit bigger than the Corsa if possible, maybe in the range of 6-8k?

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks
Daniel

Would you really want to do lots of motorway miles in a 1.3 CDTi Corsa?

Contrary to popular belief, these small engined diesel superminis don't do particularly well at high speeds either. Even at 70mph, their engines are pretty stretched, and they take ages to get there, anyway. I really doubt you'd see anything like 60mpg on the motorway from one.

You could, dare I say it, get a nice Mondeo 2.0 TDCI for that cash, which should easily do 40-45mpg on the motorway, and you can at least do it in comfort :p

The new Renault Clio DCi is a very nice, small/medium sized car, and is reputed to give 60mpg+ in real world driving situations (which are a world away from the book figures).

TDCI will easily do that mpg figure whilst occupying the BMW lane at illegal speeds.

I have a 1.3 CDTI corsa (it is well documentated on this formum how quickly I want rid of it as I am a car lover not a member of green peace but It makes good financial sense even if I only keep it a month!)
And it is very good on fuel, I have had to treat it witha heavy food and it has nearly finished its first tank, should get to 500 miles by the light I reckon, wont be far away. The engine is great upto 80mph, plenty of torque. Depends what your idea of motorway speeds are. I will be swapping for something more me ASAP.

I personaly would "settle" for 45-60mpg from something like a skoda fabia VRS or the like and have some performance. If ultimate economy is what your after, the small engined diesels from vauxhall and renault will be great, I personally would want more waft!

1.9 TDI Mk4 Golfs (Golves?) I used to use as pool cars did 56-57mpg and had quite a lot of grunt.

The Fiat Panda 1.3 Multijet is the best small diesel you can get with one of the newest engines, said to give you 70 mpg before chipping :) .

The corsa 1.3CDTI uses that engine I think, Its just rebadged.

My dads old A3 1.9 TDI 100 got us to The NEC and back on just over 1/4 of a tank of diesel. Thats about 250 miles. And he wasn't really chugging either.

If you are going to be doing mostly motorway miles then a larger 1.9 / 2.0 litre diesel engine would be better than a small 1.3 Diesel engine.

It will cruise a lot better and economy wise there won't be much in it after a long trek.

I had one of these for a week driving round Italy.

Fun for the nevelty value and not a bad little car, will do 20 gazillion miles on a thimble of diesel, easily.

D4D Yaris is ment to give good mpg. :)

dunno about the Yartis and MPG, but i drove a corolla D4D when the celica was in last, and wow - best performing diesel i have ever driven.

Felt quicker than the Leon FR, and was 50BHP down - awesome...

Drove one with Dad down the length of France, supremely comfortable all the way and had the required diesely torque to get over the Massif Centrale :) Dad averages right around 70mpg on a tank of fuel with a mix of town and motorway driving. Best he's had over a tank since buying the car is 74mpg.

yup I can confirm they are silly on fuel, just runs on fumes. if you are a normal driver the fiat/corsa 1.3 will suit you fine. if you are a fast driver you may get frustrated, as I have said 80mph is comfortable on the motorway and I got 108 out of it on a flat road just to see how far it would go. (closed private road of course I would never condone speeding.)

My Fiesta Zetec Climate 1.4tdci has done over 2000 miles and averaged 49.2mpg (for the whole distance since new)

Now bare in mind thats lots of town driving and motorway driving (and sometimes i do slip to 90mph) with the aircon on all the time and never driven economically.

No big car is going to get close to that, yes it may well be more confortable but the question was economical was it not ?

On the day i got it it was driven from Birmingham and had 57mpg as an average so i suspect the combined isnt that far off the 60+ ford claim if you take it easy with the aircon not stuck on all the time.

citreon ax diesel can't be beaten for a cheap car in all aspects. However dont expect to exceed 80mph and Is very slow. However a tank lasts forever.

I think the point trying to be gotten accross is that these little diesels arnt as horribly slow as people make out, my corsa certainly aint fast, but it has useful torque and cruzes fine at 80, doing stupid MPG in the process. I wont be keeping it, but if that is what floats your boat, (it is for a lot of people) then its perfect.
