Most 'generic' fps?

By my own admission, I personally think that I suck playing fps games. When I played cod2 on my 360 online I was pretty good, not one of the best, but frequently finishing games as one of the better players. I haven't really played online much in the last couple of years, and have now moved onto pc.

I do occassionally play TF2 online, but I get raped hard. Usually I'm strictly average. I used to frequently finish as one of the lowest scorers, but over the last few months I've found myself actually fnishing somewhere in the middle :D Maybe I don't play it often enough? There's loads of people who seem to have a whole load of upgrades etc, maybe they just spend more time playing than me?

What is the most generic fps game, one that I could play that would help improve my general fps skills? CS:Source?

Also: I've been playing Bad Company 2 single player for a while now. Considering how long it's been out, is it actually worth playing it online now? Or would everyone just be miles ahead of me?

Thanks lads

CS Source is quite a hard game to go back to if you have been playing more modern shooters, other than the AWP you will be constantly looking to change the view from hip fire.

you'll get buttraped in CS.

Most generic fps is probably one of the recent CoDs but CoD and skill don't really go together.

Imo best way to improve at FPS is to play UT99 against bots, upping the level of the bots until you're beating them on godlike. There's really no better way to train your fast-twitch mouse skills than that. You probably wont get to the point of being able to beat them, but even playing/practicing against adept/inhuman bots will make you better than the majority of fps gamers.

CS:S Deathmatch Servers. Unreal (like mentioned above) - Anything fast paced online.

But CS:S on Deathmatch is what I use to get used to hardware/peripheral changes when playing fps'. It's quick paced but requires the right amount of slow down skill.. eg. you won't be running around spraying and getting kills (if you're playing a good widespread map)

I've always preferred practicing with human opponents. Especially one's you can never beat.

I remember playing AvP as a bug. Knew this German guy who was always Pred. 1 vs 1 with him were intense and I always lost. But man did I improve my skills drastically. I just became a very good xeno (species leader for my clan). For him, he just got an increasingly tougher bug to kill and that improved his twitch skills.

If you find a human opponent who can basically train with you, it's just so invaluable.

Quakelive, it'll match you up with people of your skill level initially (in theory) and increase your status as you get better so you'll generally be playing against people that will be good competition. Plus its one of the fastest games you'll play once you get to the higher levels so twitch, positioning and timing are all key skills. If you can dominate in QL you'll have a head start in every other fps you play.

If he's basically never played an FPS on the PC he will get destroyed on Quakelive, the skill matching system is far from perfect (read: not very good). You need a huge amount of skill to be anything better than average. Not a good starting point.

As much as I love Quakelive I can't bring myself to recommend it to beginners of FPS games.

TF2 is not really a skill based game, it's easy to do well. If he's not very good at that, well... you see what I'm getting at. :p

Having said that though Quakelive is free so if you feel up to the challenge why not give it a shot. Just don't take it to heart if you can't do well.

You could try a game called UrbanTerror. It's free, and based on the Q3 engine (it used to be a Quake3 mod). Not only will the game teach you decent twitch skills, it'll teach you to bunny-hop or circle strafe in games that have similar physics, the community is still active - but with enough newbs that you won't get pwned, and there's room for even the best players to increase their skill through trick-jumps and positioning. And again, it's free. It's old now, and the graphics are rather dated - but it's still a great shooter at its core.

If you're tired of getting pwned, maybe try a cooperative game - like Killing Floor, or L4D.

TF2 is a good one to learn on tbh.. Go medic and watch other people as you're healing :)

You can easily top the board, or at least top 3 as a medic without doing any kills yourself

You can get two points before the gates even open :D

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll have a look at the games mentioned.

As I said, I was good at Cod2 on 360, but that's no achievement :p And I'm average at TF2. I'm just afraid of playing BF BC2 online and getting raped without lube.

Bad Company 2 isn't that bad, really. You do have to give it time though. Perhaps pick Arica Harbor (or maps that are more infantry-based) on conquest mode or something and stay on it until you get your bearings. Battlefield games can be played fast or slow it's up to the individual or maybe it's best to get in a squad and follow for awhile to learn the ropes.

Just take your time and try not to get frustrated. You will die lots on any fps you try really.

Generic? - MW1/MW2/BO
To get better at fps? - CSS (although go back in time to last June before they "updated" it).

To get better at fps ie aiming and movement play quakelive.

CSS is simply about anticipating your enemys movements and not much else.

I would not recommend any particular game, just find the style of fps u like and start playing. I would recommend though finding a game type within the game that does not have a spawn timer i.e. team death match until you get your aim in so that you can get straight back up after you are killed.

Its quite important to get your game set up and allways use the same settings. Find a nice mouse sensitivity that allows you good accuracy but also lets you turn around at a decent speed so you can do a 180 without loosing time. Also make sure you have mouse acceleration turned off on your operating system.

Once you have done this it's just practice and you should be able to start to develop your 'twitch' aiming.

Then its getting to know the maps, objectives, how people play etc, spectator mode can be handy for this.

Personally i used to play CS about 10 years ago these days i can't be bothered with tactics and tend to just solo rungun cod games.
