Most 'generic' fps?

To someone new to pc gaming CSS may be a bit brutal, the game though back in its day had beautiful balance and probably still has. IT may work for you but it would be jumping in the deep end to see if you sink or swim.

I'd say something like QuakeLive fits the bill because:

-It's free
-It doesn't need fast hardware to run
-You can play 'generic FPS style' i.e. FFA where you can run around fighting and just respawn straight away if you die. Anything with 'rounds' is likely to be tough for new players as you get killed quick and then can't participate again until the next round.

I personally find BFBC2 quite reasonable as I tend to finish in the upper half of the score tables on average. I've played tf2 online in the past an never really got into it and tended to finish low down the table on average with an occasion good game were I'd top the table. With BFBC2 getting the right load out seems to make a difference. With mavity effecting everything and destructable scenery it also seems to make more sense. The spoting ability also helps.

I played a lot of half life death match on lan at uni but bfbc2 is the only online fps that has actually kept me interested to play more than a few hours.

Hi, I'm not really that new to fps to be honest. Been playing them for a long while, just never taken the opportunity to 'hone my skills' as it were. I played some CS:Source a while back, not much but just a little bit.

Thanks for your advice all, I'm taking it all on board.

I think people are overstating the difficulty of these games somewhat. The average player on a public server is anything but godlike, and if you're going to give up after getting "owned" once, then you're never going to learn.

For me its all to do with learning new maps (which can take a while) games like CoD rarely rely on uber reflexes these days, its about knowing where to aim and where to look when walking around for the usual camper spots and entrances. When MW2 came out, I sucked because I had no idea where I was going, once you start getting the lay of the land and get a gun you like then you start to rack up the kills, same happened when the 2nd map pack came out (couldne bt bothered with the first), I was aweful but slowly as the maps get put into your head then you will fare a lot better. Its the same with every online game ive played recently. I start off middle to bottom then end up near the top after quite a few plays on the map, still some blaco ops maps I always suck on purely because ive hardly played on them and get lost still looking at trees.

The general populace of online shooters are rubbish, they just know where they are going. You will improve, no need for external practice. Get a gun you like and try and work out where the campers lie (there are ALWAYS campers) and which corridor goes where. Works for me anyway.

What I have found with online FPS is that people are decent (mid-high) at CS (1.6 in my case but I spouse its relevant for source) are good at pretty much all other FPS games.

Think it mainly comes down to knowing how to position yourself correctly, and how to predict opponents movement.

Also stay away from any games with "prone", wth is that bull..

Indeed. I think its the reason CoD games attract so many aweful players (black ops has just made it worse). Prone spam, quick scope rifles, Grenade launchers, Runner perks and weapons, Explosive car. It gives tools to the inadequate for easier kills.

Play TF2 :D

Go on dm_store (search on the server list) if you want to improve your aim. Play as scout - it's the most familar class to play for new TF2 players. You're fast, have super high dps at close range and you can dodge really well if you have good movement. Work on getting 80+ damage with 1 shot (turn on damage indicators in the multiplayer advanced option) at close range and staying alive with your movement. If you can jump around, make soldiers miss rockets, demos miss pipes, etc while doing decent damage to them you'll be a nightmare to play against.

People will say "scout is a utility class best for capping points etc" but that just isn't true. Scout and soldier are the two best classes for pure killing ability. Scouts can 2 shot most of the classes at medium/close range.

I mainly play soldier which also has a very high skill ceiling. If you want to practise soldier I know of a custom map that is 1v1 training, it's extremely helpful for learning how to play soldier. We can play on it if you want to get better.

Just started playing Quakelive. Wow, it's a modded version quake 3, enjoying it, Hopefully it will help me to hone my skills :D

You're probably aware of this but virtually everything in QL is customizable, make sure you make the most out of that.

There is a great web tool for creating your own HUD here.

Also you might find this guide useful.

Very quick clip with my hud / settings:

Apart from I play with drawgun 0

*Sigh* wish I still had time to play :p damned final year of uni.

if u wanna get good as FPS's css (or 1.6) is perfect, yes it will be very hard at the start, but once you master it you will find other fps's much easier to get into etc.
