I have various friends who have upgraded from 3gs's to iphone 4's and since I have managed to get Android (froyo) working on my HD2 a lot of them have seen me using it and asked what it was:

'Whats that on your phone'

'Its Android running on my windows based HD2' I say

To which they respond:

'Whats Android'

'Its googles mobile OS, its very good have you not seen any of the handsets? The Desire or Galaxy S? Surely you had a look when choosing your iphone 4?'

'Nope never heard of those phones or Android'

I find this crazy! They don't even know what it is! When does anyone in their right mind just go out and buy something of that expense without even looking at the competition? If they actually used a new Android handset I am sure they will find it just as good if not better then their iphones!

Whats wrong with people!

[/end rant]

Might wanna look up the definition of band wagon, looks like your friends use it a lot ;)

Anyway, I also get people along the same lines but more to the fact that they keep thinking all HTC phones are the same, which bemuses me....

Yes, it's wrong, but it's not just the phone industry. Apple have done brilliantly though, the OP's experience is proof of how well they've manipulated their market.

I predict this thread will not end well though, it's a contentious topic for some reason.

Ask most mobile users what iOS4.0 is and they'll say the same. Nothing to do with mobiles per se, your average consumer just hasn't a clue what operating systems are. For the most part they'll know what phones are from a visual glance, and the iPhone being near identical throughout each revision will always be the most recogised.

Talk to your average joe nobody about android, symbian, winmo or iOS and you'll get blank looks.

Most people who have iPod's have never heard of any other player, bar perhaps walkman's, but I doubt many will know they still exist.

This is the same thing again, except not as all-encompassing as the iPod, as apple got to the game late and weren't the company that created the phone market, even if they did massively expand the smart phone user base.

Besides, ask them what OS stands for, if they don't know, they can be ignored :D

If you're into tech then you take it for granted that others know about Android OS and stuff. The reality is that a lot of iPhone users bought the phone because it looked good and was marketed well. They're not techy types, like a lot on here, that bother chasing up reviews and knowing what JIT is (or even a 'ROM').

They have a 'phone' that they can use for the internet and download apps/games. That's it for them. Of course, the more tech savvy society gets the more they'll realise Android and 'Open' is better :)

We all moan about everyone following apple, there are 9 Iphones on my floor at work, and three of us with Andriod phones. We are viewed as the cheap skates who could not afford iphones.....

The thing is Apple have done a wonderful job on marketing, that is where the desire and other phones fail.

I have a desire and would never trade it for a iphone, but it will never "beat" a iphone due to Apples marketing.

It's true, Apple have done a pretty good job at marketing. Just look at FaceTime (redonkulous name :D), and how they've marketed it as the best thing since sliced bread, and that they practically invented video confrencing. When in reality, the iPhone is worse than the very first phone that could video call, as the iPhone can only do it over WiFi, not 3G.

To a lot (not all) of 20 - 40 year olds owning an iPhone is very much a status symbol or expensive fashion accessory. These sorts of people will never acknowledge other brands because they wont buy them the same level of social acceptance owning an iPhone will.
Let me reiterate - this isn't a blanket statement but I've seen enough of it at work to know its a sad fact.

I actually talked about a friend recently about this. She was upset the iPhone 4 was sold out. So I asked why she doesn't consider an Android phone.

She had no idea what I was on about, after explaining she only responded with this.
"Oh, so it's just a cheap iPhone? Why would I buy a cheap knock-off."

I just didn't feel like even talking to her anymore after that, specially since she's never heard of any of the iPhone problems and thinks I'm lying about them.

Marketing is really a powerfull thing.
