Most pointless domestic appliance phone apps?

My fridge has WiFi. Not quite sure what it does but I can't imagine it's anything useful
Does it have an app where you can check contents from it? (inside of fridge needs a camera) So if you are shopping and unsure about the milk situation at home - you can check milk at home from the supermarket on the app. A step up from phoning OH and asking about the milk.

Ah yeah my Mum's does that. And you load it in via NFC so it isn't even really "connected". Very odd. I wonder who sits their designing their own wash cycle?

You laugh, but our washing maching doesn't seem to just have a "spin" function so we loaded one in through the app. It's not something we looked for in a washing machine it just seems like they all come with an app now.

Part of me liked the idea of loading the machine before going out in the morning and then setting it off when i was around an hour away from home so it wasn't sat all wet in the machine for hours, but the app seems buggy as hell so after a few attempts i've never tried since.

The oven i can agree with. Being able to preheat from a distance, but again probably similar to the above it's probably not something i'd use in reality.

What annoys me is there is no standard API or application framework, etc. lots of stuff uses some random badly written app which wasn't done in-house, sometimes requiring a backend connection to some informally hosted server to function, often with dubious roots in China, etc. with a good chance the whole appliance becomes useless if the app no longer functions.

Even for some of the more official stuff the way it is implemented a good chance that if the company should go under you lose functionality or the whole thing becomes useless, etc.

I have to laugh when I think someone's lights/ doorbell/washing machine could get bricked.

I can't think of any real benefit for me from most connected home appliances. I'm not so busy I need to save 17 seconds walking to and from the kitchen to put the oven on. If I'm oven cooking, there's food prep to do while it's pre-heating. And so on...

Maybe something will convince me, but I haven't seen it yet.

On essential aystems (lights, water, cooker, fridge) I would actively resist WiFi and similar.

Pressure washer is daft.

There's gotta be a rotary washing line one out there somewhere :D

My friend has no light switches in his house, cause app. I imagine it's fun when leaving your phone somewhere and it's dark.

Its not really a new feature though, washing machines have has delay timers on them for decades which you can set when you put the washing in them.

PS. You should use the long (3ish hour) eco cycle where possible, it uses less energy, often quite a lot less.

True, but you don't always know when you're going to be home. Maybe traffic is bad or you decide you want to do something on the way home etc. As i say, i don't ever actually use it but i can see it's benefits.

A wifi fridge, for people who fail at life.

My oven is remote -just tell wife to turn it on -Only problem is she isn't smart and never looks in to see if there is anything in there - I happened to put my steak in there to keep flies off it.

With the pressure washer, it would be quicker to adjust a knob or similar.

Smart Kettles. As it needs human intervention to fill the kettle!

An app' like that would be potentially useful to me as I am often using the lance 150 feet away from the machine and need some steam, or to reduce temperature.

I literally just took delivery not 10 mins ago of a new dishwasher that has Wi-Fi and an app…
Made me chuckle when I bought it.

I struggle to see past the gimickery.
But I suspect in the future you'll have to have and use an app to get appliances to even turn on.

Anyone know of any Wifi Toilets? I'm always on my phone when doing a number 2 so it would be much more convenient for me to just use the flush app instead of having to turn around and actually press the button. I mean its like a physical button as well and not even capacitive, it just feels so backwards. I want to get with the times and have a number 2.0 while browsing OCUK.

Would be nice if it had a built in camera and email, so I could automatically send photos of my logs to people- cutting out the time wasted actually posting them through people's letterboxes.
