Most reliable drives ever?

I was put-off Maxtor a few years back when a friend bought a PC that had a Maxtor in it. Noisiest HDD I've ever heard, sounded like a tractor, and you could hear it very easily on the other side of a large room, over the sound of the stupidly loud fans the P4 needed to stop overheating.

I've not had any difficulties with Seagate and I tend to stick with them. 3 Seagates in my PC, one in my notebook (pure chance that Dell decided to put that in though), and the two Seagates in my step-dad's PC are still fine too.

That's not exactly how I meant it - I mean their range has not been a main focus of their company. Samsung have been doing electronics gear for ages, but companies like Seagate etc and built on the HDU industry. They are effectively newcomers considering only recently have they become much more prominent in the industry and the fact the companies they compete against are actually just HDU manufacturers.

you have a point, but even Seagate and WD etc.. have had absolute dogs and unreliable drive models, so maybe Samsung needs to be cut some slack as so far in my career they've not been bad at all and i've hardly seen failures from them, Maxtor on the other hand has been a topsy turvy ride from the start, some good models and then rotters, then back to good etc..

There will never be any true 'best' manufacturer as it depends on your own experiences, my comment above is based on the company i work for with around 15000 PCs and 5000 laptops. But we dont use all manufacturers such as maxtor and samsung....so thats also slighly bias

So which manufacturers do you use? And what sort of failure rate have you seen?

15000 is a very good sample and that is why Im interested to hear your experiences.

We use mainly WD and Seagate, with others such as fujitsu IBM etc for various other machines. I will see if I can get some reports from our hardware team, as im more software orientated, but there is a definate lean to WD last time i saw the stats of failures / time in situe...

Will post back with more acurate figures soon

When you say "lean to WD", does this mean that you feel WD is the most or least reliable?

Yes looking at the stats WD were indeed more reliable than seagate....but that was around 6months to a year ago. Will be interesting to compare the more up to date info

Well I bought 3 250GB SataII Hitachi Deskstars for RAID 5 setup and 2 drives failed within a month (died completely). A third has just gone too (numerous bad sectors). Performance wise, they are evry good but in my opionion they certainly aren't reliable. Used Seagate and WD drives in the past and they have been great. Have come accross loads of Maxtor failures. Samsung are new to me. I have a 320GB Samsung running in my Media Player and I cannot believe how quiet they are. They're great but can't really comment on Samsung reliaility yet ;)

We've got 4 pc's in our house, i've built them all and they all have Western Digital Drives in them, never had any problems and one of them must be at least 6yrs old.
