MOT Failure Statistics - released by VOSA as a result of FOI request

There is no point in taking any of this info serious, as far as I can see there is plenty of mass produced cars which every man and dog own.

Unfortunately these statistics don't really tell us much. I've been crunching various numbers and it's all rather meaningless. It says more about the typical owners of certain cars than anything else.

Not been able to find out how retests are accounted for yet. If they're counted as both a pass and a fail then it would massively increase the overall failure rates.

Yep, just spoken to a friend at work and he informs me more mk1 golfs are on the road according to the latest DVLA list they have than reported in this excel file.

I also want to know which VW golf was used in the year 1900.

I think it also says that there were only 3 Audi RS4's MOT'd

nice - Corolla no.1

when i passed my MOT in December, i was shocked i had no advisories for anything. Guy said Toyotas and Corollas in particular usually passed first time and never really recieve any advisories.

It will have quite a few errors and cars grouped into the wrong place and we'll need to be careful to strip away the failure things which are because of stupid owners not cruddy cars if we are going to judge reliability.

You simply can not judge reliability from this, only how well the owner maintains their vehicle. Old cheap cars are usually run on a shoestring with virtually no preventative maintenance so MOT failures are common. It doesn't mean the car is unreliable however.

There's various inaccuracies in the data, but by and large it's OK. I've validated a number of models and the numbers are not far out enough to be considered worthless.

The Corolla isn't No.1 - the Gallardo is! The top models are dominated by exotica.

The best performing mainstream model is the BMW 116, oddly.

Most minis seem to fail on suspension, interesting that seeing as that was about the only thing my cooper didn't fail on :p

The data means naff all. All it could possibly say is certain types of car get treated worse.

There is absolutely NO reason why my car should ever fail and MoT as long as its checked over it frequently and preventative maintenance occurs.

In theory it MoT shouldn't be needed at all because everyone looks after their cars, don't they? ;)

More interesting data would be from garages who *fix* problems...
