A motherboard doesn't add any performance though so no point in overspending on one.

I have B450 tomahawk, 5800X and an RTX 3080 and I get just the same gaming experience as someone who brought a £400+ dark hero or aorus master with a 5800X and 3080.

Same CPU and GPU as you, but with X570 Tomahawk. I'm happy with my budget mobo and couldn't be tempted to go for an expensive one.

Been looking at B550 boards for a little while for a proposed 5800X build but last night pulled the trigger on a 5900X!

I'm 99% sure a B550 board will serve me fine as I've not got any PCI-E 4 bits yet and will never need more than 1 M.2 SSD at 4.0. Had been planning on just grabbing a B550 tomahawk but the more I look more I just seem to be creeping up esp now with pairing with a 5900X. The better (not best) B550 boards seem to be around the £150 like MSI gaming edge WiFi / Gigabyte Pro V2 but I just think for sake of £30 get the X570 tomahawk and be done with it. It's got a decent number of usb I/O ports, WiFi ( not really needed), decent vrm so ticks all the boxes but without going over the top.

I'm looking at upgrading from my i7 2600k (@4.3ghz)
My most confusing part has been what specs to build.
Looking at this post and the Tomahawk looks like a decent motherboard to go with. Thinking of pairing with a 5800X or stretch to 5900X

I may stick with my Vega56 for now as game at 1440p.
What memory have you guys got? This seems to be another area I'm lost on what to get?
Also these M2 stick drives. Are these for your OS and are they much better than an SSD?
I currently have the M4 Crusial SSD 250GB for OS and a 2TB for gaming.
Whilst I'm building, am I best to also get a new PSU as mine is 12years old? (Of so what?)

Thanks in advance.

Gaming 8 core 5800x would be more than enough, b550 gaming edge wifi or tomahawk if you dont need wifi.

Gone with 16gb or could up to 32gb 3600mhz and definately a new psu 750w corsair rm or simmlar. You would also need a new cooler for the 5800x and mirw as well get a new case . 1tb m2 for games and os.

Can be changed to RGB Bling.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £931.79 (includes shipping: £15.90)

You can get a good motherboard for £100, £150 certainly, but the top-end prices are getting ridiculous, for sure.
Prices are on the rise because we (as in PC Enthusiasts) have shown we will gladly pay more for incremental upgrades. The day the 2080ti launched at near £1,500 and sold out was the day the top cards became £1,000+ forever more and the midrange jumped to £500.
