What are they like to own?
Running costs, road taxt and all that!
Did Honda ever sell them (officially) in the uk or are all the dc5s in the uk imports?
They are great cars, pretty bullet proof. Best overall FWD car I've driven as well (except the FD2), it will keep many modern hot hatches honest. They are like a grown up DC2 really but more comfortable and newer. Keep them serviced and they won't let you down.
Main things that do go wrong are the O2 sensor and sometimes the rear light cluster seals fail and let in water. Both inexpensive fixes. Apart from that normal consumables apply, brakes all round can be had for less than £250 from Honda, clutch change is £400 at a specialist. Servicing is around £150 for a minor and £250 for a major minor being every 12500 miles and major every 25000 miles. Honda dealers will charge more though than specialist. Personally I'd rather have a specialist service it than some 18 year old grease monkey on an apprenticeship with Honda. I have also heard stories of Honda garages failing to do up sump plugs!
Running costs wise, they are expensive to insure, as they are all grey imports, so fall into group 20. They also need the highest RON fuel you can get, they run best on V Power and Tesco momentum from my experience. Typically you'll get around 280 miles on an average tank of 50 litres. Some people get as low as 200 if they are ragged, if you take it easy, up to 350 is possible on the standard ECU (all motorway at 70 ish mph). Get it KPro'd (ECU modification to allow a tuner to change stock map parameters, around £700 or so) and you'll get close to 40mpg and 400 miles from a tank on a long run and over 300 miles on average. Not bad as the car would be well over 230bhp with a KPro, and over 240 with a decent intake, manifold and exhaust.
Had mine for 3 years till I unfortunately wrote it off
and the only thing that went wrong was the O2 sensor and I put some sealant in the light clusters to stop water ingress. O2 sensor at the time was £150 or so I think from Honda.
I will have another, but need some more NCB as the insurance is a killer so I'm driving around in an ATR which is a nice substitute.
