Wouldn't matter if you did submerge the alternator. As long as it can suck in fresh air and not twigs and water, it'll start.
Gone are the old days of getting a dizzy and points a bit wet and things splurged to a halt.
All modern sensors and plugs are waterproof. All they need to "pick up" is a magnetic signal and your away...
