Mountain Biking

I couldn't believe it yesterday when some lad about 7 or 8 came past on a mini e-MTB. Being able to ride with your old man and keep up must feel great!

Yeah, I agree. People seem to think kids shouldn't be on an ebike, I think they should. When my nephew comes out with me, he's knackered quickly (rightly enough, he's slugging a heavy bike up an angle he doesn't when out playing). To have him do laps all day with me, having much more fun and the same amount of fitness - therefore growing the sport and the love for the outdoors. Yes please.

Kids need eeeebs.

I think ebikes have so many of these sort of use cases where they just enable people to actually enjoy the ride without feeling a burden so they can ride with competent and strong riders and see they're enjoying themselves too.

I know when I go out with the missus it's on the road and flat generally and can only do it when the weather's nice as I get too cold, yet we watched the giro last year up etna with her on an emtb and me on my road bike and we both had a great day. Being able to ride uphill for 1.5hours was just something that wouldn't be possible without them.

Guys who got me into mtb are now mostly over 60 and I rarely go out with them now because of the speed discrepancy, emtb would solve that! Although they're too stubborn to get one
:D

Loads of local old guys up my local hill in them. It's like an oap ebike club :D. They absolutely love life on them. Most of the time they're doing more laps than us! Ebikes are awesome! Can't wait to get one.

Not sure I'll ever be convinced of ebikes for me.
Number one I like to build my own bikes and so far at least I haven't seen a frame only one.
2, I haven't seen one I like the look of yet.
3, the cost is just insane, maybe that will come down eventually.

Getting annoying the lack of parts now, just want to build my new bike but can't get hold of anything.

The only issue with ebikes - is the cost IMO.

2 - who cares when your zooming to the top for lap 400. Fun > aesthetics :)

Not for me, I enjoy building and messing with bikes just as much as I do riding them.

Think is as well I've never find my limit distance wise on a bike I either run out of daylight or get bored before that comes an issue.

I guess it might mean an extra lap of places like gisburn, but I usually leave because I'm bored not because I'm tired.

I'd definitely try one of they were cheaper and looked good, bit for now they just don't offer enough value for me.

At the lower end then yeah comparing costs eMTBs come out expensive, but midrange I think the gap is closing. Obviously going to be more expensive because of the extra tech but that premium is without doubt shrinking.

Fair enough. My local riding is steep, so most of the time I'm done in within 3-4 laps. Don't think I've ever left out of boredom - normally knackered and hungry :) They're just different bikes for different folks.

I doubt I'd swap my gravel bike for one.

Yeah, sadly I don't think they'll ever approach 'affordable' but maybe our price anchors will change and they'll become more justifiable!

I only ever go high end but u still don't see the value.
Probably the lack of frame only, I don't ever but a full bikes with of parts so costs are spread out. But for instance next bike I want a Transition Spur and full AXS setup.

If frames become available, and in a style I like then definitely try one.
Might be waiting a while as it's the batteries that ruin the look for me, I can deal with the motor.

Need to explore both of these, not really ventured out past the M60 yet with the bike. Got plans to do Llandegla with a couple mates soon and Gisburn will be on the list too.
I find gisburn a lot better than llandegla, more technical stuff so rewarding I find.
Rivington is great if you know where to look a lot of hidden trails and enough there to spend all day.

Manchester, go gisburn a few times a year. Ride Rivington a lot as that's only 20 mins away.

Never been to riding at Rivington even though not far at all from me. Before getting the trail bike I was purely dh. Mainly riding places like Antur Stiniog and Revolution in the dh bike. Just over two weeks till I go Dyfi Bike Park :)

would love an ebike for trips up to the golfie, that fireroad climb back up to the top is a killer and i've had enough after 3 or 4 descents, would also keep me fresher for the descents.

Quick update on bike...

Bike was dropped off to Southsea Cycles this week for a full service which is a full strip-down, clean, lube, adjust, check etc etc. They called me just now asking who upgraded the drivetrain. I explained it was done by a local bike shop at the time as I didn't have the tools or time/patience. I explained that the local shop recommended spacers because the chainring was rubbing against the frame so I said ok and things have been fine since.

Southsea Cycles guy said the spacers have been added to the bottom bracket which isn't the correct way to do it in this setup and that the SRAM NX comes in two sizes where the chainring is either for boost or non boost and the product title/box etc won't state boost if it's boost, you just have to know the offset of the chainring. Of course I did not know this info at the time so ordered the NX drivetrain thinking all is fine. SRAM currently have stock issues and there is a delay on getting stock until Feb 2022 so they are currently getting my BB back to how it should be set up and then looking at alternative chainring options which I am fine with as long as the quality/performance is at least NX level. Expecting a callback a bit later with those options.

Alternatively can anyone recommend a suitable chainring I can order and get sent straight to the shop? Any upgrade installs are free with Sothsea cycles if a service is being done at the same time so may as well make use of it.

Edit*
Scratch all that just got a callback saying no need for a new chainring, what was incorrect was the spacer set used, the clearance of the chainring was 0.7mm from the frame, they contacted SRAM direct who sent across specs for my bike's config with the SRAM and the spacers used by local shop were completely wrong as the clearance should be 2.2mm. Also there were signs of the crank being overtightened so potentially the BB bearings may need to be replaced if they've been compressed.too much. A set of SRAM spacers has been ordered at £17 which should sort me out

So 4 months in and the freehub on my stock junk hub is starting to bind up, likely due to it having zero sealing. Not so ideal for a bike designed for off-road riding, eh...

Any advice as to a decent replacement rear wheel? Don't want anything mad expensive, sub-£200 ideally. Frame has QR dropouts so either QR or 135x10 bolt axle would do the job nicely. Been looking at Superstar, can get their V6 hub and a WTB i29 rim for £170ish, can't see much better value unless I just buy a Novatec hub or something and lace it up myself then get it trued at a shop?
