Mountain Biking

That is my eventual goal but I need to build a bigger shed where I can have a bike stand free-stand and I can work on it without all the current faff!

Ended up going with separate insurance on the bike, the home insurance wanted £98 plus a £30 admin fee =O policy has been running since December so would be scared to find out how much they'd want for the full term...

has anyone had any experience of using the bike to work scheme (or similar) when the company wasn't previously enrolled? The firm I work for is only about 50 people but the accounts department is small (just me basically).

Would be interested to hear your experiences!

Not sure what you're asking here... If the company wasn't previously enrolled, is it enrolled now? If so I'm still not sure what the question is :D

Haha sorry, it's been a long day!

Basically, I'd like to approach my MD about using the scheme and ideally I need to go in knowing the requirements for the accounts side of things, whether we have to let our payroll company know etc etc. He relies on me for this sort of knowledge so if I'm going to get it through the door I need an idea of how it works.

Would also be good to know if people have used it and whether they had any problems. Does the bike have to be bought from a specific retailer for example?

So, got my Superstar built rim today which was unexpected, delivery was due Monday. Anyway, app fitted and it's nice. Looks good, took a bit more effort to get the tyre to seat than the WTB stock rim but it's fine now and holding pressure. Sounds lovely, feels smooth and the black rim/spokes with orange nipples is a nice look!

Certainly feels better value than dropping the same money on a Nukeproof Neutron V2

I had a set of superstar rims, they were bombproof.
I mean, for being the same price as say a Neutron V2 rear and cheaper than any Halo/Hope/DT offerings they seem pretty solid. Not much more than some Novatec based builds either.

The V6 hub has a nice sound to it too, lovely buzz :p

Now it's time to go get it muddy after all the rain the last few days, fun fun!

I managed to snag a Vitus Nucleus 29 VR from wiggle but have only ridden it a couple of times. I'm new to mountain biking and it's unlikely I'll ever be using it to it's full potential. However, I've noticed the suspension feels very firm, it doesn't feel like it's absorbing any bumps. I can push down on the forks and the suspension moves so I don't believe it's in a locked position but it isn't as soft as I would expect. When I bought the bike from wiggle I entered my height and weight which suggested that they would set it up but I don't know if that includes the suspension. The saddle was spot on though!

Has anyone got any tips to set it up correctly?

Get yourself a shock pump first off, can get one for a tenner or so, as the fork is an air spring. A normal pump will have a hard time as it's high pressure, low volume in contrast to say a type pump which is low pressure high volume.

Watch this and it'll show you how to set it up correctly for your weight etc. Just stick a zip tie around the stanchion for the setup and remove after, as the Suntour fork doesn't have a pre installed o ring to show travel

Thank you, I have ended up buying a shock pump. The youtube video looks quite straight forward too.

Very straight forward to do, just one bit of advice though, follow the manufacturer guidelines for that particualr fork pressure/sag at least until you have a really good feel for how higher or lower pressures affect fork performance.

For example, you might be tempted to use a lower pressure so the forks go up and down more easily, but that can lead to 'fork dive' under heavy front braking, and throw you off the bike. Infact, dont worry too much about the PSI as not all shock pumps are super accurate so one pump might read 80 PSI and another will read 100.

Sag is what you want to look at, (that's where the rubber band/zip tie comes in) usually expressed as a percentage of fork travel, so you might want about 2 or 3 cm of sag on a 120mm fork for example.

Thanks to amazon prime I had my shock pump delivered this afternoon. I found that the pressure was over 110psi and according to the table I found on the suntour website for my weight it should be around 70/75psi. I have removed some air from it and there is more travel now. Whether it’s 100% I’m not sure but I’ll try it at the weekend. Thanks for your help!

I also bought a garden sprayer today which I can use to blast air in to the tyres to seat the tubeless tyres properly. Hopefully another easy improvement.

Still no news on the GT, looks like it either wasn't shipped from the manufacturer, is hiding in warehouse on the dock after being left behind or fgell off the back of the wagon during transport.

So, look what I rode away on today :D:D:D

How are you finding the Reaction TM? It's on my radar as a strong contender for an upgrade to my 2009 Halfords special :p Having a 1x12 set up, dropper and full internal cable routing really appeals.

Extremely happy with it. Currently it's taken everything I've thrown at it (canal towpaths, roads, fire roads, up on the moors, some easy downhill trails) in it's stride without skipping a beat. The components seem to be rock solid and bullet proof, the forks in particular, but the obvious caveat is that I haven't taken it anywhere seriously stupid yet due to me not exactly being in the best shape at the moment.
