Mountain Biking

Evening everyone! I think we can all relate to what I’m about to share.

I’m finding it hard to motivate myself to get out and ride. I don’t have anyone nearby to ride with, so I mostly go solo, which isn’t a problem for me.

I really enjoy riding and taking care of my bike—I’ve never had a “bad ride”—but I struggle with motivation. I know my fitness level isn’t the best, and that contributes to it, but it’s not the whole picture. Life at home is busy, but I can easily make time, and my partner is very supportive.

What do you do or tell yourself to get out there?

As I mentioned, I need to improve my fitness and lose some weight, which is part of why I want to ride more. I used to ride every day when I was a teenager (I’m 36 now), but I’m finding it tough to get back into the habit.

On a positive note, I recently got a new bike—a Saracen Mantra Elite—which is really cool, so that’s not the issue!
I’m over in Darlington and there’s plenty to look at between here and where you at. Always open to a ride out.

My local "bike park" here is closed off due to damn NRW / Forestry work so that's my riding buggered for half a year :( Over to Cwmcarn from the house instead!
I recently started riding back at Gisburn after a number of years off the bike. Parts of it were unrecognisable after the deforestation. I watched back some old videos and it's amazing how different it looks.

Is it the whole place that's closed or just sections.

It's going to be access to the entire area :( There will be numerous 35 tonne dumpers using the main forestry track 'climb' that cuts through the vast majority of trails up there.. I'm hoping it will still be accessible for nights rides if anything.

Do I winterise the Specialized or the Nukeproof ?

Carbon traverse with 2.4 Cannibals DH case to Alloy traverse with 2.6 Magic Mary/Hanns Dampf enduro case ?

Roval (standards) with 2.3 Butchers Trail case to alloy traverse with 2.6 Magic Mary/Hanns Dampf enduro case ?

I’m tempted to keep the Status as it is and change the Scout as it’ll be easier to clean and less of a faff.. I also have a spare cassette the same range as what is on both bikes as well as spare 200mm rotors where as I don’t have spare 220mms which will make life easier for a quick change going down the Scout route.

Decision time…

DHX2 Factory on the Status to replace the Float X Performance for bike park days -

index.php
Is the DHX2 new? They really do not like the yoke on the Status, often blowing up after a short period of use.

If you really want to run a coil, you would be better off fitting the DX2 which has a thicker shaft assembly and can handle the lateral loads from the yoke.

Anyone used Shockwiz before, got one to have a play with, curious to see what it suggests.
Very good bits of kit, regularly loan mine out to riding friends. In my experience you really need to have a good selection of trails to use it with and the more you put in, the more you get out.

BPW is a good place to test and where I usually take mine if I am setting new stuff up, very easy to pick your tracks that the SW wants to do its thing.

Servicing your forks and shock is far more beneficial than just using the SW and hoping it will do something magical, however. Only so much it can do if your kit is not performing at its best.

Its new and as I prefer to hit things with speed and blind luck rather than skill I have significantly higher spring rates than one would typically run which should be more than enough to prevent the damage you mention. It doesn't help that they're 230mm where as most bikes running a DHX2 run 205mm or 210mm. That in its self reduces the load on the shaft so the worry is there but not something I am too bothered about. As for the Status blowing out the shock, they blow through the float far more often with that thing needing 330psi for 90kg!!

Anyone had problems with Magura MT Levers? My ebike is 3 months old. Lever had a crack in it. Not had an off or hit it.

bike shop wanted me to run around the houses for warranty, new lever £125 odd. Decided to try Shigura setup with XT levers. Works a treat.

While fitting discovered my levers were upside down on the wrong sides and the crack is because someone has cross threaded/forced in the hose nut and the wrong size olive. This in turn is looks to be what caused the crack in the plastic housing. Bike shop feigned ignorance when faced with the evidence. So £50 for a couple of new XT levers and I'm going again. I will worry if they start being funny if I need motor/electrics warranty work.

Yeah I plan on just riding and letting it collect data for a full day then see what it says. I'm in no rush.

BPW wouldn't work well for me.

Shockwiz will tell you what type of riding it wants you to do. I always found it got stuck. It wanted me to pedal uphill or downhill. But would never say that was completed. Best accuracy i got was 90%. I used it as a start an then played with settings on my ebike.

I just plan to do loads of the riding I normally do. If you've ever been to the Marin Trail (Gwydir Mawr) that pretty much sums up my type of riding.
Hoping to head up Rivington on Saturday so will do a few laps of the stuff up there see what it suggests.
From what I've read and seen it so already, once I get my sag where I want it I can mostly ignore the recommendations to change the pressure and focus on the damper suggestions.

negative, you get an airwiz too? they do a tyrewiz also.

all seem kinda pointless imo, but I guess the shockwiz has some value.

From what I gather some bike shops are extremely passive when it comes to chasing up Motor manufactures and fighting your cause, and others will keep chasing it up and not let Bosch etc take 3 months to get a motor shipped.

Sounds like you got the bikeshop that likes to sell bikes and not have the hassle of after service.

A longer stroke and a heavier spring will exacerbate the lateral loads the yoke puts on the DHX2's shaft. There's a reason why the Status gets the DHX (not the DX2, as I stated earlier) for the coil models.

When I mention 'blowing up' I am referring to the seals on the DHX2 failing, not going through the travel. Look into a Sprindex for your coil as it will allow you to adjust the sag/spring rate without having to swap springs - you will need to adjust other values on the shock when going up a spring rate 'click' though, so also be mindful of that.

If you are happy with the DHX2 and have warranty on it as the first owner, even if the shock craps out with the yoke you should get looked after by Fox/Silverfish when you send it off for a service.

The new status has a redesigned rear that uses an Rockshox part On the DH orientated part and an DHX performance on the 170 enduro. For the shock of that spec (230x60) you get 160mm of travel on the older bike, not 170 which reduced the lateral load by a few percent on the older bike when compared to the new one. On the larger bike S3 and above it’s an 230x62.5 for the same travel due ti a slight tweak to the rear linkage positions. The older bike from 2020-2024 never ran a coil, it was an air shock in the form of the Fox Float X Performance and another fox float version prior to the change to the Float X where the seals were quite literally blowing through. There’s very little issues recorded on the older bike regarding the DHX or DHX2 although issues are indeed recorded. Far less than the original shock mind but it’s horses for courses. The more you have, the more failure you get. It’s all relative. The dimensions of my DHX2 and the Float that came off are identical 230x60 and the DHX2 the stronger of the two.
