Mountain Biking

There are so few 27.5” wheel bikes available now, even fewer of these are trail hardtail bikes
My son is looking for a trail geo hardtail and there appears to be just 3 options.
  • Marin San Quentin
  • Canyon Stoic - size XS
  • Giant Fathom - older stock
Bike makers should realise not everyone wants to ride 29” wheel bikes.
Kids grow out of their 24” ‘youth’ bike and the next option is a 29” wheeled bike

29" small will have the same reach and height as a 27.5. No?

You love a Trek, so get him a Ticket DJ - seems appropriate for the type of riding he likes/wants to do, you can set it up with gears if you need to in the future and even mini-mullet it, plus it's really expensive so it would suit you as well :D

Since getting back into MTB last summer, Having an off ive gone balls deep into it.

Ive joined groups, had hours and hours of coaching. My wife thinks its my mid life crisis. I find it super enjoyable met some great people too.

I think Dyfi bike park is probably my fav place right now. I still love the ebike, I'm at forest of dean most weeks practicing on it. I'm there Sunday and BPW Monday. I'm currently undecided on what to do with my e-bike.

Just fitted a new shock to the Merida and fitted a 180mm air shaft to the 38's. Will be trying it all out at BPW on Monday.

Now you are riding a wave of confidence and enjoying yourself, get yourself down to see Rich @ RSR Bikeworks and have him go over your suspension and set it up for you and your riding style.

He's based Newbury-way so not a million miles away from Bristol (he can and will travel if needed, but his 'home' tracks are great) and it will unlock further potential in your riding.

I pass Newbury each week on the way to work. Might check it out. Mojo set me off with a tune for my weight and riding style.

At bpw today but suspension testing has been overshadowed that I snapped my chain start of second run.

Shimano XT chain only done 5 or 6 rides. It was on the roof of the car in torrential rain to and from the Lake District a few weeks back.

Might need that new xtr di2

That's weird, XT is usually really solid - I have never had a snapped chain with Shimano 12sp. Did it break the quicklink or somewhere else and did you get it from somewhere reputable?

There are a lot of fakes out there, including stuff direct from Amazon where they must put all the 'fulfilled by' stuff in the same bin as their own stock.

XTR chains are the longest-lasting in my experience, but prices are all over the place. Somewhere around £36 for a 126L is what I've been paying.

I think I got it from Amazon.

A pin popped out, very weird. I had a new deore chain in the toolbox so swapped it over. It had surface rust on it very strange for a chain only a couple of months old.

Maybe it was a fake. Will not do Amazon again.

Edit:

Pin looks like it exploded out.

I know Framesets are always expensive, but this seems mental!

Trek Pro Caliber Carbon Frame €1499

Trek ProCaliber 9.5 €1999

Does anyone know if there are ever any negotiations to be made as it almost feels worth buying the full bike for the extra €500 just for spares or to sell!

I'd definitely get the full build there and sell what you don't need. I doubt you'll get anywhere negotiating with the big brands.

Cheers, i've been trying to find the frameset a little cheaper elsewhere but there doesn't seem much in it. Especially when anywhere which is has a small 10% saving as an equal saving on the full build.

It's a shame Trek don't seem to spec SRAM except for the top end bike. The goal is to build up a suspensioned gravel bike to replace my Trek Marlin, but want to use SRAM AXS and having the XDR hub would make life a bit easier/cheaper if i could've reused the wheelset.

I like the isobow bit of flex which would work great for gravel, although maybe finding the previous gen isospeed frame with the AXS spec makes more sense.

First ride review of the Unno Mith from The Loam Wolf, which might have @SDK^ coming back down to half mast with some of their comments.

Non-production components and setup aside, it seems to have all the usual Unno quirks evident which shouldn't really come as much as a surprise. Shame, but plenty of time for things to be put right before the production models roll out.

rumours Orange will be announcing a phase DJI bike at eurobike. Interested to see what comes out of that. Was very impressed with the Avinox in the amflow.

I'm test riding a SC Vala tomorrow. I rode the medium 2 months ago, taken them this long to get me a large to try. (I'm right on the cusp of M/L).

Zero point with a DTC brand, some mileage with a brand who sell through bricks and mortar stores.

Trek do tend to price their frame-only options at the higher end of the price range, usually with an accompanying special/fancy paint job or at the very least the same paint that their highest-end model has.

Are the parts worth €500 to someone? Eh, probably... but if you literally just want the frame, think about who will buy those forks with such a short steerer tube. Wheels and groupset will be easier, but again are you going to get your full €500 back?

Personally I would buy the full bike, but for the purple/blue flip colour. That's the best of the lot right there!

Yes I watch this when they published the video.

Can't really say much when the bike they tested is different to what buying customers will receive, it was built and intended as a show bike. Also, it was tested with different shock, which was faulty, with a non-production linkage - still looks an amazing bike, and they were complimentary on it - the lightest bike on test, most powerful motor, with the longest range and most capable DH bike (fastest up and down the hill) they are testing in the group.

Yeah, i've been working through the parts value and it's probably minimal and certainly not worth it for the hassle of trying to sell, given there's not much i'd want to re-use. Agreed that colour is probably the best available. The red the frame only comes in i'm hoping would look better in person.

My other option is the Orbea Alma although it's harder to find in a frameset only. I like this too, but the Trek is a decent chunk cheaper

Strange geo on the Mith - 460mm reach on the S2 and 490mm on the S3? That's either a short XL or a long L in the biggest size.

If they can remake something like the Phase Evo, shave some weight, add some range but make it more more affordable they'll be on to a winner. Their prices are insane at RRP.

Patriot rides well, but it looks like a tank and the spec is woeful for not much shy of £9k.

I did a thing...

Full XO T-Type kit for Bosch. (cranks, chain ring, cassette, derailleur, battery, charger, chain and shifter.)

After a third chain at around £35 on the Shimano XT after around 200 miles I caved. £999 for the kit instead of about £1600 and then £60 for an XD driver rather an the Microspline currently installed.

Ill now take the SLX derailleur and shifter off of the Scout and put the XT on as it doesn't get anywhere near the battering. That puts the Scout on full XT inc brakes for a nice set.

Very nice.

I’m trying to get back into it. I just don’t know where to start or who to ride with.
