Mountain Biking

Very nice.

I’m trying to get back into it. I just don’t know where to start or who to ride with.
I was riding solo for a while. Then a i had a big off.

My mates i used to ride with all now have families and other interests.

I joined a bunch of facebook groups. Did some meet ups and group rides and met some awesome people who i now ride with regularly.

Today was humbling. Any plans to buy a new bike with goals of long distance stuff are on hold.

Planned a 40km ride with 1000m ascent and whilst the heat didn’t help down in the canyon. Some of the climbs just showed my fitness isn’t there and no amount of lighter/better bike is changing that.

Decided I’m going to use a spare ebike battery my dad had replaced and stick a mid drive motor on my current bike. That way I can build up duration but with assist on the hills and then work on reducing assistance.
Once I’ve got the fitness/strength I’ll treat myself to a new bike!

In the past ~8 years, I've seen both sides of hill climbing.

When I was 73-83Kg '17 to late September '22, I enjoyed flogging myself at approx 4W/Kg up 5-20min climbs when approaching my 50th.

But in recent years, I've piled weight to ~96Kg on and lost so much fitness, 5-20mins climbing at approx 2.5-2W/Kg is a horrible slogfest.

Being able to get up to ~2.5W/Kg assist in turbo mode on my newish ebike has made it much more pleasant and like you, I'm hoping that getting out regularly on the ebike will build me up a bit from this low level of nearly 3 years of long covid and two recent respiratory infections since buying the ebike totalling ~4.5+ weeks.

This is the thing, i'm only 39 and so think my fitness should be better, it certainly has been better in the recent past and i do enjoy flogging myself to an extent. Since coming to Spain i've jumped from ~93kg to ~105kg which has made hills massively hard. I'm slowly reducing that down again and i think a new bike works as motivation if i set myself a target of "New Bike at 90kg" :D

Has anyone done the Forest of Dean mini enduro?

I was thinking of giving it a go at the end of the month, but I'm not especially great, only have a hardtail, and have never entered any MTB event before

It's pitched as beginner-friendly, but I'm not sure quite how 'beginner' you can be

Damn, was going to jump on getting a Jeffsy Core 3 AL today as they were 50% off. However, I've got home from work and they're back up by £1k now. :(
I'm looking at new bikes and it wasn't my first choice, but at just over £2k it would have saved me a fortune even if I wasn't a fan of the colour.

I was planning on buying the Core 1 this year as my first full-suspension, but have had to postpone due to having to buy a horse for my youngest :D

I notice it's currently got a deep reduction too, though I'd want to buy through cycle to work scheme and YT don't allow the discounts on schemes, sadly.

Thanks for mentioning this.
Just checked it out and it looks great - would enter myself and my son but we are going to Bike Park Wales the same day :(

We’ve been to FoD twice in the last 2 weeks (midweek). The DH sections are really fun, feels like this place is much better for the rider looking for more technical stuff than what Cannock Chase has to offer.

Dammit. Stuck an electric motor on my hardtail and get it all wired up (Tongsheng TDSV8) and was about to take it for a test ride before realising I hadn’t fitted the chain and my spare chain I planned to use isn’t long enough.

Now need to find a bike shop tomorrow with a 138link chain.

Update to my gifted and returned e-bike prior posts; after getting the full return and refund organised I was able to choose an alternative bike that cost significantly less that's much more practical for me as well.

I was going to choose the Epic hardtail but decided against carbon frames as I'm used to aluminium ones and am concerned with extreme temperature variation on a balcony negatively affecting a carbon frame's lifespan. I also watched a lot of videos of carbon frames snapping, and a few aluminium ones too including an Orange frame that exploded, but I do think carbon requires more care, and even with repair options is a lot more expensive. Also stories of carbon frames getting damaged from being placed on their side on sharp rocks, or not being able to clamp on them, etc.

So I ended up choosing the 2025 Chisel Comp; at £2100 it's almost a grand cheaper than the Epic and only about 4lbs heavier, still very light for me at about 25lbs. I almost got the 2023 version without realising the 2025 version existed, as Specialised UK have older versions in stock on their website, but managed to change order to the 2025 version that I prefer that's lighter and in a better colourway for me.

Feels really smooth and easy to ride, doing much longer rides already without feeling any extra effort. Mostly using lockout as lots of hill climbs in my area, but the front fork is really nice for unlocked for downhill trails. Frame is a large but doesn't feel that big, I think is still a better option for me than the XL would have been. I ordered some Specialized Bennies platform pedals to go with it as it doesn't include pedals, which match it really well. Lame as it may be, I've left the reflectors on as I think they add a lot of visibility for very little weight, but I did at least take the bell off. Colour is basically black with a blue tint, looks a lot darker than in product images and is also matt, not gloss as described, but is still a good looking colour.

Very happy overall, saved my family member a lot of money and still got the best bike I needed for my purposes. Will likely keep and replace parts off this frame for many years.

A great bike all said a done. Superb solid frame and reliable components so all being well the upgrades will be exactly that rather than repairs to tired parts down the line. Its a shame the emtb wasn't practical but you've got a banging bike from a very generous family member and they're no doubt still happy to have helped. A win all round.

Trail looks lovely where ever it is you've ridden off to.

Many thanks I'm enjoying it a lot.

The picture is from Richmond Park just up the hill from from Ham Gate by a bridal pathway, I walked off trail a bit to prop up the bike. Only one good off road bike trail there but it does go around the whole park with lots of hills and varied landscape, good distance at 7 miles+ too. There's lots of good places in the park that aren't allowed on bikes but you do see riders flouting those rules. It has many good concrete bike paths too so I am often using it on those as well, though I tend to avoid any roads with cars. Overall very happy with it and how good it feels to ride.

You could always add some extra links and just use 2 quicklinks?

Right lads, been a while since I did any significant bike part shopping. With the downfall of CRC/Wiggle, its a shell of its former self. What is the "go-to" online bikeshop now for best selection and reasonable prices?

Merlin, 3 peaks, bike tart, team cycles. All of them seem to do a decent enough job. Westbrook too.
